Doctor Emma Phantos could not believe what she heard, was it true that they really had come across the identity of Gena? Hell she hoped so for it would be the final problem left unsolved in this city before she moved on. Well, all problems but one. I am going to hunt that particular person down at lunchtime and see what I can do to make things better. This news has really made my day! I think I will share it with Simon before morning rounds.
Liz looked and felt pretty rough when she arrived at work and the stress of the shift hadn't helped the situation either. After the multiple traffic accidents, a drug user who wanted to attack everyone in sight, going to lunch was a welcome break.
Sitting in a far corner, away from the normal traffic and holding her aching head she wondered about Gena and her new identity. What the hell am I going to do now that Gena has been given the key to a new life? Will I fit in or will she forget me once she moves on? What will I do without her in my life? Damn my head hurts serves me right for not knowing when to stop. OW!
Lost in her thoughts as she pushed her salad around the plate, she failed to notice a certain doctor until she heard the scrape of a chair on the floor next to her.
Looking up she stared into the grey eyes of the one person who she seriously had lost her heart too. Now, it was just an embarrassing nightmare after her drunken confession last evening.
"You obviously don't recommend the salad?"
As no immediate reply was forthcoming she continued.
"I had a call today. Seems that our mutual friend Gena is no longer a lost soul, she does have a past. What do you think of that?" she looked at the woman who continued to push the food around on her plate refusing to make eye contact.
"Okay, I can go if you want to be alone?" Emma finally sighed heavily, glancing at the bent head of her friend with a weary shake of her own head.
This shook Liz out of her reverie. "I'm sorry Emma, I have a headache. Too much booze last evening, and yeah I'm glad for our mutual friend."
Emma smiled holding out a hand that revealed two pills in the palm. "Go on take them, its just Ibuprofen. I had a feeling you might need them today."
Sheepishly Liz took them out of her hand, swallowing them gratefully with fruit juice to help them along.
"Guess I was a little out of order yesterday, sorry." Liz looked at the smile of her friend and noticed that it got wider as she apologized.
Emma reached across the table and touched her hand. "Did you mean what you said?" grey eyes held brown in a concentrated stare.
Liz did not know what to say. Here I am in the corner of the hospital cafeteria with the one woman who holds my heart asking if I meant the words ‘I love you.’ What in hell am I suppose to do now? I was drunk what better excuse…amnesia!
"I...I don't know what you mean?"
Emma laughing softly at the comment "Oh come on Liz you can surely do better than that. However, to help you out here, I have a meeting tonight at Harry's with Gena’s new buddies. How about you come too and we can discuss this later?"
Elizabeth Eponin turned several shades pinker nodding her head. So much for amnesia! I don't think she bought that one.
Emma's beeper went of at that moment. "No rest for the wicked they say. Shall I pick you up at say eight tonight? We can have a meal before we go to the bar. Something tells me I will not have time to eat today and by the looks of your rather interesting dissection of your meal, neither will you. See you later." Her words floated in the air as she left.
Liz looked at the retreating back of the doctor her mind filled with a fabulous thought. Have I just been asked on a date? Yes, I do believe so! Shaking her head in wonder perhaps today wasn't going to be so bad after all?

Liz’s Apartment
Early Evening
Liz unlocked the door and walked into the apartment singing, or attempting too. She certainly perked up since her meeting with Emma. Looking around she noticed the lights hadn't been turned on and except for the smell of food the place looked deserted. Then she saw her tall friend hunched in a chair near the window, gazing absently outside.
She walked over to her friend putting a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You okay?"
Gena looked up at the concerned brown eyes levelled at her.
"Yeah of course I am. Why wouldn't I be? Hell, I'm getting my life back!"
Liz heard the pain and terror in the voice of her friend. She sat down on the edge of the chair as she tenderly stroked the hair away from Gena’s forehead.
"It's okay to be scared you know. You don't know these people or anything about them and yet they have come here and offered you your life back. That has to be terrifying for you Gena. I want you to know that whatever happens I'm your friend, and I will stay your friend even if you move to Chicago, okay? Nothing will ever change how I feel about you. I am here to stay in your life Gena if that is what you want." Liz stood up and holding her had out to Gena.
Gena grinned at her friend, clasping the hand held out to her.
"Liz, you gave me a lifeline once before and now you offer me that lifeline again. Do you know what that means to me?" she choked on the words, close to tears.
"Sure I do, you tell me every single day in all manner of ways. Come on lets have some coffee shall we? Then I’ll tell you who has asked me on a date, at least I think it's a date."
They walked off chatting as they headed to the kitchen area.

The doorbell rang and Gena answered it. Emma Phantos was waiting outside the door, dressed in a tight fitting blue dress, which certainly left nothing to the imagination.
"Well, well Doctor, maybe I should have said something earlier and we could have been treated to this image sooner." Gena smirked at her friend.
Emma didn't lose her composure at all, grinning rakishly at Gena. "I thought she was worth getting dressed up for."
"Oh I'm gutted Emma, and I thought it was because of me!" Gena laughed at the comment motioning for Emma to come inside. "She certainly is worth it. Please don't hurt her will you, she cares a lot about you." Gena spoke seriously to her friend.
Emma looked into those ice blue eyes that held deep affection for her friend.
"Hey who's the doctor here, she will be fine, trust me Dad."
Laughing they walked further into the apartment. "She should be out soon, do you want anything to drink?"
"No it's okay, anyway what about you! It is quite something this new scenario isn't it? What do we call you now?" Emma remarked casually.
Gena shrugged "let's see what my old buddies have to say first shall we." What indeed will we call me? For I only know Gena not this Stephanie person.
Emma saw the tension mounting in the woman and let the comment ride, turning as the door to Liz's bedroom opened. Out stepped the smaller woman in a crimson leather jacket and black leather pants, the picture…one of raw sexuality.
Emma and Liz made eye contact completely ignoring Gena.
Clearing her throat Gena spoke with a hint of laughter. "I guess you guys had better head out or you won't have anything nutritional to eat. I'll see you back at Harry's later."
Not sure if she was going to receive a reply, she went towards Liz, gently nudged her forward, holding the door open for them to go out into the hall.
Closing the door behind them she leaned back on it. This is going to be one long night, one way or another. Perhaps this will be the new start to my old life and the end of my new one. Sighing at the preposterous situation she was now in she walked into the bathroom for a shower. I wonder if I should select something more glamorous to wear tonight? Nah wouldn't be any point in that joint.

Acceptance
Gena smiled at Louise and Paul as they walked into the bar. Louise Masterson, dressed in jeans and a plaid shirt in pale green looked very young. Paul Ironside was dressed smartly but with a decidedly casual look.
These strangers are my life, how bizarre is that? And yet, in some recesses of my mind that I can't quite grasp they are familiar. Are you two the answer to my questions the end of my search for my identity. I am lost…have you come to find me?
Gena immediately pulled out two cold beers from the fridge passing them over as they reached the bar. Paul was about to pay for when she stopped him. "Those are on me." She smiled at him and waved him over to a table in the corner.
"My Doctor and my best friend are over there. If you join them, maybe you can convince them you're for real." She teased him.
"Sure, no problem." He walked towards the table.
Louise could not take her eyes off this woman. Every time she speaks I want it to be to me, and only me. Just one more touch, just one more look, just one more smile…please Steph come back to me I need you so much.
Gena looked at this so-called friend grinning at her. "You're not joining them?"
Louise’s mind pre-occupied almost missed the question. I want you back, oh god how I want you back!
"I thought that you and I could talk, in between you serving that is?"
Gena laughed, visibly relaxing for the first time that day. "Yeah, I would like that."
"Good, because so would I. You and I have a lot to talk about."
Gena gazed at the woman in front of her, smiling warmly.
"Well I hope so. Because sure as hell you frighten the life out of me with what you've told me already!"
Louise smiled sympathetically. Is this the feeling of coming home? I don't know for sure but I sure as hell hope so. "I know, but it's going to work out trust me and let us worry, okay?"
Gena ‘s worry subsided as she warmed to this green-eyed woman in the time they chatted amiably, while her other friends entertained Paul Ironside.
"Was he really my best friend in this other life?"
"Oh yeah, you inspire him did you know that? He once told me stories about you that even I couldn't believe at first."
Gena quirked an eyebrow "why couldn't you believe them?"
Louise blushed a little. "Because I knew a very different Stephanie Gregarious to the one he talked about in his early friendship."
“Tell me one of the stories, please?” Gena asked interested in this woman Steph’s personality, which clearly indicated belonged to her.
Louise felt the charge in the room around them, her voice lowering as she regaled Steph of one of Paul's earlier memories.
Paul Ironside had tried every contact and all turned out to be negative in his attempts to find a studio or show his current paintings and sculptures. He'd been out of prison for a month and he was now looking at the dog-eared business card that Stephanie Gregarious had given him, telling him to call the number when he was released. He hadn't wanted to of course. He was grateful to the woman for helping him at the trial, by vouching for him cutting his sentence from several years to six months. He wanted to thank her but she was out of the courtroom as soon as her witness testimony was completed. He hadn't seen her since that day, often thinking about her. His lawyer indicated that Ms. Gregarious worked for the government, unable to find out any more about her, a real mystery woman by all accounts.
Turning the card over once again, he reluctantly dialed the number. Several moments later he was tempted to hang up, when a voice from the recent past he recognized said hello.
“Ms. Gregarious?”
“Yes, who is it and what can I do for you?”
Stephanie Gregarious had been about to take a shower and have an early night. She had been in South America for the last four months, and needed a good few days sleep in a comfortable bed.
“I don't know if you remember me but….” Paul stuttered, astonished at the rejoinder.
“Mr. Ironside. I wondered when you would get around to calling me, you've been out for what four weeks now?” her low-cultured voice asked.
“Yes! Yes how did you know it was me?” Paul asked astounded at her recall, of not only his voice but also the time he'd been released.
“I have a good memory for faces, voices and events regarding people I'm interested in.” Stephanie Gregarious replied un-emotively belying her statement.
“You're interested in me!” Paul squeaked out, she was a very beautiful woman without a doubt, but he had the distinct impression she wasn't particularly interested in him or men come to that.
“Yes, you sound surprised why would that be?” Stephanie said her voice betraying slight amusement.
“Well, it's not as if we liked each other at first sight and then there was the matter of the crime I committed. I wouldn't have thought a woman of your status would want to hang around with an ex-con?” Paul answered honestly.
“Paul Ironside I have no intention of making you my next lover, but I am interested in the artist in you.” Stephanie did chuckle at her end, the man was cute but her preferences went to a more feminine form.
“I…that is I…Well the artist of course!” He exclaimed embarrassed at the comment.
“I take it you haven't a studio or any funds coming in that would help you continue your artistic leanings?”
“No. I'm going to have to find a regular job or I will be on the streets soon.”
“Thought as much. If you're interested in the following meet me for coffee at nine a.m. sharp, tomorrow at Starbucks on central. I will fund a studio for you until you get established and I want the first refusal on all your work to come from the studio…at a fair price I might add, I will also arrange your first exhibition at a friend's gallery within the next twelve months. Good evening Mr. Ironside.” Stephanie replaced the receiver and continued on her way to the shower and much needed sleep.
Paul Ironside looked down at the phone in his hand and couldn't believe his ears. Had she really offered all that he dreamed of, and in exchange for only first refusal on his work? Surely there must be a catch, there was always a catch wasn't there? He didn't care if there was he would find out if what the woman said was genuine. Hell he had nothing to lose, but a tremendous amount to gain.
Gena had been absorbed in the story, so absorbed she didn't register that Louise had finished her tale.
“I assume she or should I say I, came up with the goods?” Gena whispered to the blonde woman.
“Oh yes, you certainly did and more besides. You became great friends and the first painting you were offered was the landscape of the place they had really forged the first links of that friendship, as unlikely as it seemed at the time.” Louise said smiling at the wondrous expression on the tall woman's face.
Gena blinked at her. "What was the Stephanie Gregarious that you knew like?"
A wistful smile appeared on her face as Louise remembered some of the good times. "She was gentle, witty and completely in control of her life." She loved without reservation and was completely loyal. I guess that sums up how I saw Steph." She loved me with such abandon and desire. Her touch thrilled me like no others. She holds my heart and soul.
Gena walked off to serve another customer with those words circulating in her head. Not to mention the fact that in the story Louise had told, it appeared she was gay as well, that should make Liz chuckle.
Liz appeared at Louise’s shoulder and gently placed her hand there. "Paul has told us all about the situation, I think you and I should have a chat what do you say?"
Louise tentatively smiled at the woman she perceived to be Steph’s new lover. "Yes I guess we do, let's sit over in that corner." She motioned to a table not too far from the bar.
They sat opposite each other and both watched Gena in silence for a few minutes.
Liz decided to break the ice. "You loved her?" it was the only relevant question to be asked and answered between them.
Louise looked into the sympathetic eyes of the woman in front of her.
"Yes, I loved her and still love her, the Steph I know. The woman here today is different in so many ways to the one who loved me."
"Yes, from what Paul has told us, she certainly isn't that same person, and you do realize she may never be that person again?"
"Oh, I came to that conclusion when I realized she had taken you as her lover."
Liz virtually choked on the drinks they had brought to the table with them, explaining to Gena as they moved away that they needed to talk for a while.
"I'm not… she's not… oh hell, we aren't together! Damn, it's my fault that you have that impression I just take the rise out of her from time to time and call her lover. She's my best friend." Liz was embarrassed and guilty as the gentle green eyes stared at her unsure what to think.
Then Louise’s expression changed to one of astonishment totally relieved at the confession. "I'm sorry, I had the impression that you were together. It hurt like hell when I thought about losing her all over again once we had found her at last."
"I know how it must have seemed. I also know how much you care about her by coming here and trying to do what's right, even though it was breaking your heart. Doctor Phantos doesn't want you to tell her your part in her life just yet. She doesn't want Gena…Steph, to feel pressured into something she's not ready for and may never be."
Liz explained feeling heartsick on behalf of this small brave woman and also for her best friend who might never know what joy and happiness she once had with Louise Masterson.
A small hand clasped Liz's hand on the table.
"Thank you for telling me, it would have broken Paul's heart to have to tell me. One thing that has held true is that Steph could always choose her friends well. Thank you for being there for her, she means everything to me and I hope one day to be in a position to tell her again!"
"Paul tells me you have a daughter?" Clearly seeing the difficulty the woman was having holding her composure Liz tried to change the subject.
Green eyes blinked away the unshed tears and smiled. "Yes, Emily Stephanie she's a year old. I gave birth to her a week after Steph was lost to us, she was supposed to be there with me for my sister's wedding and the birth."
Liz looked at her intently as she recalled the first ever conversation she had with Gena in the hospital.
"Louise I want to share something with you. The first thing she ever said to me when she woke up was that she felt she had to be somewhere, and that it was important. Obviously she couldn't remember where or what, yet the urge was so strong she felt it profoundly when she woke up, it was always her intention to get back to you!"
Louise sobbed as she realized that Steph had never truly forgotten her. Inside my Steph is still there, I just need to be patient and wait for her to come out of hiding.
Gena walked over to the table just at that moment.
She knelt down next to Louise, taking her chin in her hand and looked into the bleary green eyes. "Hey Louise this big bully isn't upsetting you, is she?"
Gena asked in a relaxed tone, although there was urgency in the tone to know what was happening here.
Louise tearfully shook her head. "No, no she's made me happy, you have a good friend here."
Gena slapped Liz on the shoulder and grinned at her, "Yes I surely have, how is the date going by the way?"
Liz grinned at the question. "Oh the date, well look yourself at how it's going. My date is engrossed in conversation with a man and I felt like the third wheel."
All three women looked towards the other table that held their friend's.
"How about we go and break it up. Steve will be taking over my shift now for the rest of the night, I thought I better know something of what's going on."
Gena explained and went to get a fresh round of drinks for them all.
Emma Phantos looked up as Liz and Louise walked up, smiling warmly at Louise. The glance she gave Liz was certainly not for public discussion in a bar.
"So, you two finally found time to come back to us?"
Liz was ensnared by the look Emma gave her, turning crimson, which almost matched her jacket, as she sat down next to Emma with a beaming smile.
Louise sat next to Paul who clasped her hand in comfort and understanding.
"Steph is coming over, she's finished for the night."
As if on cue Steph arrived placing the fresh drinks down, not sure where to sit as she sipped from her own beer eyeing everyone round the table. "Well, guess it's time to talk turkey here, who gets to tell me how much I should know or not, Emma?"
Emma looked up into the ice blue eyes of her friend, and then compassionately glanced into the green eyes of Louise Masterson, they held understanding.
"I think we dispense with Gena for a name, never did think that suited you anyway." She replied with an engaging grin.
"Okay… that's simple enough I guess. What else?"
"You go to Chicago with Paul as soon as possible. I would suggest tomorrow but you wanted to take Liz with you and I know she can't make it until next week. Although I'm going to Chicago myself the day after tomorrow, maybe if you need support on the first trip you could put up with me?" Emma said practically.
Steph looked at Liz for her reaction.
"We discussed this at dinner, I think it's a good idea and I promised Emma I would take time to see Simon if you needed her to stay a little longer. I think you need to do this as soon as possible Ge…Steph."
"Right, we go day after tomorrow then, what do you want me to do?" Her voice was firm and without emotion, surprising everyone around the table, except Paul who had heard that very tone and authoritative direction on many occasions in the past.
"I will collect you and Emma, we will fly by private jet to Chicago. Then on to the lawyer and your apartment for starters." Paul smiled warmly at her.
"Private jet? Okay, then what after Chicago?" Steph continued.
Louise entered the conversation at that moment. "Then you come to Ampolisa to see your gallery. I hope you can spare the time to visit with me and my daughter when you're there."
Steph looked directly into the warm green eyes, her blue eyes warming at the friendliness from the blonde woman.
"Yes, I like that idea, but what about your husband?” It was a tentative question.
Louise laughed softly. "I haven't a husband. Let's just say, my love has lost its way and I'm hoping one day it will return." Enigmatic and the others round the table watched Steph for her reaction.
"Okay, I hope for you and your daughter's sake, your love comes back to you both soon."
"Yeah, so do I." Louise spoke in a whisper. I want you back Steph.
Emma glanced at Liz, deciding it was time for them to go. "I have to attend a meeting early in the morning and I know Liz needs her sleep after last night's adventures. Therefore if you don't mind, I guess we will leave you guys to arrange the final details."
Liz looked slightly embarrassed but pleased. Steph grinned and told them to go and have a good time with a wink of her eye. They all bid their goodnights, as Emma grasped Liz's hand heading quickly out of the bar.
Paul looked at the retreating pair. "Seems to be an even match there don't you think?"
Steph smirked at the retreating backs of her friend's. "Oh finally they are, would you believe it's their first date tonight?"
Louise heard the warmth in the last remark. "Then I hope it all works out for them."
Steph looked at the pair next to her "Oh it will work out, they love each other. Haven't you read any of the great poets, Love conquers all! Just need to keep that thought in your heart."
Paul wanted to inform Steph about her relationship with Louise. But it wouldn't be right as Emma had told them, it would be too much pressure on the woman at this time. Steph, my friend, keep that thought in your heart. Love will conquer all!
Louise spoke, as the whispered words were lost to the other two at the table, both consumed by their own thoughts. "Well, I hope my love never forgets that."

Chicago Apartment
Stephanie Gregarious was in a state of shock. Not only had she finally been convinced that she was who everyone said she was, but also overnight she had become a wealthy woman. The accumulated riches had been the biggest shock to her and now she knew why they had arrived here in a private jet and there was a limo to take them to the lawyer's offices. Her portfolio of assets had been staggering it was like finding a winning lottery ticket unexpectedly.
Paul had been there to support her and Emma was due anytime to stay at the apartment with her. She hadn't wanted to be alone in what was definitely a strange place to her. Nothing was familiar, absolutely nothing! If this place belonged to me why can't I remember any of it? Surely there is something here that I know!
Walking round the rooms she saw a very functional style, nothing particularly personal, just a place to stay but an expensive place to stay and she owned it!
The master bedroom was also practical, with very few personal items mainly comprising of expensive clothes, in gigantic walk in wardrobes. Then there had been the jewelry that was in a discreet safe behind a painting on the wall. Her lawyer had given her access numbers to the personal safe but she hadn't wanted to open that without Emma being there with her. She just didn't have the courage to find anything more out about herself at this moment, without at least a familiar face at hand.
Paul had gone to make coffee, and now was lounging at the doorway watching her scan the rooms. "My wife Fay asked when you are up to it, maybe you will call to see her and the kids?"
Steph looked at him and smiled. "Yes I would like to meet your wife and children, they sound great."
Walking across the expanse of the room she went over to the window, which faced the park, having a beautiful view of the lake. "Has Louise arrived home safely?"
Paul smiled briefly. "Yes she arrived home as planned and is now suitably wrapped up in her daughter."
"She made me feel relaxed when we talked together. What was her lover like?" Steph couldn't resist the question her curiosity getting the better of her.
Paul unprepared for the question took a few minutes to compile a reply. Steph if you only knew.
"The person who loved Louise was totally besotted with her and loved her dearly. Circumstances arrived that prevented them being together at this time. However, she hopes one day they might overcome the difficulties and they can have a life together again. Louise has great faith in their love."
Steph nodded her head. "Thanks Paul, she seems too gentle a person to be without love, I hope it works out for her."
The doorbell rang giving them both a much, needed break from the current conversation.
Doctor Emma Phantos hadn't believed her eyes when she entered the building a few minutes ago. The door attendant had been given explicit instructions to allow her entry as soon as she arrived.
Who is Stephanie Gregarious? Emma could not help thinking.
"Well, I can't believe this, do you own the apartment or lease it? It's magnificent!"
Steph laughed at the incredulous look on the doctor's face.
"I have been told I own it, look around make yourself at home. Paul has just made coffee."
Half an hour later Emma walked out to the elevator with Paul. "Did she react to anything, anything at all?"
Paul shook his head in dismay. "Absolutely nothing seemed to be familiar, it was like watching a total stranger take possession of the place. She seems a little tense though so I'm glad you are with her."
"Natural reaction under the circumstances, I will take it from here. See you tomorrow Paul." She placed a gentle hand on his shoulders.
"Good night, take care of her." He left her standing in the hall.
"Hey Emma, you going to come in from the hall or is that where you plan to stay the night." Steph shouted.
Emma smiled at her jovial friend that much she could always guarantee with her, a keen sense of fun. It kind of seemed at loggerheads with the power this woman had previously held and possibly still did.
They shared takeout from an establishment recommended by the lobby attendant while they constantly glanced around them as they ate.
"It doesn't look like I stayed around the place much before the accident, it's kind of impersonal." Steph said taking a drink from her beer.
Emma agreed with her, it certainly didn't have the items in the rooms that transferred someone's personality making it a home.
"I believe Paul indicated that you had gone to live in Ampolisa for a while. Traveling abroad for five months prior to the accident, so maybe that's the reason."
"Maybe." Steph replied glumly.
"Liz would like the apartment that's for sure, she loves the park. When she has a Sunday free she often goes for long walks to Central park, I think she enjoys feeding the ducks or something." Steph thought talking about their mutual friend might ease her tension.
Emma smiled broadly at this statement. "She loves the park huh? Well thanks for that information, maybe when she visits we can go together."
"Are you and Liz going to give it a go?"
"Frankly I was astounded when she said what she did in the bar that night, hell I was flattered and confused all at once. Then I realized that in the last three months I was coming to the apartment more to be close to her than to see you really, sorry about that.” Emma saw the grin appear on Steph’s face. “I went home, took stock of how I felt about what she said and what I wanted. I want her in my life Steph and I'm going to try and persuade her to come to Chicago and make a home with me. Maybe I'm being a little presumptuous, but I have the feeling after the other night she might agree." Emma sighed.
Steph looked at the pensive doctor, "I don't think you need to worry she has loved you for ages, I just think she was too afraid you wouldn't feel that way for her. Well, you had been married and there is Simon."
Emma looked at her friend. "Yeah married, that was a big mistake and I paid for it believe me. Simon is very important to me, that's why it was a good chance for Liz to find out what kind of commitment she would be getting into with me being here and she goes to see my son."
"Liz knows what Simon means to you so that obstacle is already removed. That woman has a heart of gold, just look at what she took on with me? A virtual stranger! For the woman she loves, I would hazard they could have the world, what do you think?"
Emma blushed and changed the conversation to the security safe they had agreed to open after their meal.
The contents of the safe proved to be mainly papers regarding several transactions, a decent cachet of money, credit cards, numerous pieces of very expensive jewelry and a very expensive sapphire and diamond engagement ring. It looked brand new, never been out of the box.
"Emma what do you make of this?" Steph handed over the ring to Emma.
Emma looked at the very expensive, beautifully crafted ring, and knew whom it had been purchased for. Louise Masterson! This item hadn't shaken free any memories either by the quizzical expression on Steph’s face. "Well, either someone gave it to you and you never ever had the opportunity to wear it or...."
"Or I bought it for someone else?" Steph looked at her friend and pleaded with her eyes for help.
"It doesn't register at all does it?"
"No! It doesn't bring any memories at all, maybe some of those papers will give us a clue?" she started searching through the documents and a key dropped out of a folder. It was a plain house key on a metal key fob.
"I wonder where this key belongs? The property in Ampolisa or the gallery maybe?" Turning the key repeatedly in her hand. It feels so familiar and yet not…a very strange sensation. Is this home?
"Yes that's possible, when are you planning on going to Ampolisa?" Emma had watched the nervous tension building as they viewed the articles in the safe.
"Paul wants us to travel on Monday. I will stay here with him for a couple of days, then I'm coming back to New York." Steph replied totally pre-occupied with the ring and the key.
Emma watched the stance of her friend and decided it was time they had some sleep.
Tomorrow was another day.

Fabrications
Emma called Paul immediately after she left Steph for her meeting. It was important he knew that Steph would ask about the ring and the key, he needed to be prepared.
“Thanks for calling me Emma. I will take care of everything.”
“Paul please let me know if anything significant happens. You have my number don't you?
“Yes I do Emma. If I have even the slightest doubt or notice any change at all I will call you immediately. Now I need to call Louise for I am fairly certain the key is from their house.” He hung up the phone wondering about this new bit of information.
I doubt Steph will find the house unless she remembers the relationship. The ring is a real interesting turn though even I didn't known she bought it! From what Emma found out it was purchased a week before they split up. How about that Steph was going to make an honest woman of Louise! She certainly kept that a secret, even from Louise. God what a mess!
Paul continued his journey across town to collect his forgetful friend.
Steph looked at Paul expectantly as she posed the question of the ring to him.
"Paul be honest with me here, did someone give me the ring or did I buy it for someone? If I bought it who was it for?"
Steph I really want to tell you the truth but I made a promise and the only way out is to tell you a lie my friend. "You must have bought it for someone. The last time I saw you before you left on your last trip abroad you had finished any relationships you had. The date on the receipt is a week before you left the States, whatever you planned to do with it you didn't."
Steph saw the plausibility in the statement but what she wanted to know was who had been the possible recipient of the ring. Although she hadn't taken the time to have a relationship with either man or woman since her accident it was becoming somewhat evident that her previous existence resulted in relationships with women. Hell, the ring certainly is a telling sign, I haven't heard of many women giving a man this type of engagement ring.
"Are you going to tell me whom I bought it for?" she growled at him in frustration.
Paul smiled at the familiar tone he'd heard many times previously when she was aggravated or mad.
"It wouldn't serve any purpose now Steph, she has someone else to care for. Let's just leave it, you're not likely to remember her are you?" He hoped that Louise would understand his subterfuge, it was a part truth anyway she now had Emily.
Steph sighed and looked at the ring in her palm closing her fingers over it as if closing another door on her life. "I guess not with my current track record." How lost and alone I feel. So many dear people around me and yet I am alone. Is this the way it will always be for me?
"There is one other thing though, I have found a key, and it looks ordinary and although Emma speculated it could be for the gallery, seems to look more like a house key to me. Want to give me a clue here?"
Paul cleared his voice and looked at the key in her hand.
"Yeah it looks like a house key, it's not the gallery keys, and Jane has all of those at the moment. Maybe it's the apartment?" he tentatively suggested although he knew that he had the key to the apartment in Ampolisa. The estate agent who was handling the sale of the apartment had been told to delay the process for the moment, and he would advise them shortly if they wished to continue with the sale.
"Guess I'll try it when we arrive Monday, we will know for sure then!" Steph was getting a headache. All this information meant little or nothing and was gradually getting to her. She hadn't experienced any headaches for the last couple of months; today she was going to make up for it as a screamer was beating in her temple.
Damn! My medication is in the apartment in New York, maybe aspirin will help?
"Paul look I'm sorry. I have a major league headache and need to rest. Do you think we can continue tomorrow? I will call you in the morning, okay?"
Paul looked at the strained features of his best friend and noticed that the scar on her forehead was even paler still, reminding him of how they had come to these particular crossroads. "Hey no problem, is there anything I can do for you, maybe call Emma?"
"It's okay, this is like a migraine, and if I go and sleep it off it should be fine. Thanks for your understanding." She smiled weakly at him.
"Anytime for you my friend."
He walked out of the apartment and locked the door behind him. She isn't totally healed yet, that is certain. I was going to update Emma anyway but now I want to know exactly what condition Steph is in medically. This migraine came on suddenly is that normal for her? Emma needs to know!

A Time To Review
Emma hadn't been able to leave her meeting until lunchtime, although she had immediately contacted a friend to download Steph’s records from New York, ensuring she could prescribe her medication she knew her friend required and obviously hadn't thought to bring with her.
Entering the apartment she was again astounded at the elegance of the place. It put all her apartments into the shoe box range, this was money talking and it had a tendency to speak very loudly at times. Although this was a lonely home certainly not a welcoming place, to her at least.
Walking in she saw all the curtains closed, with no sounds emanating from any room. She quietly walked towards the master bedroom and opened the door to a room in total darkness.
A huddled form was turning around in the bed, obviously uncomfortable.
"Hey Steph, how goes it?" Emma said softly.
Steph managed to extricate herself from the sheets looking blearily at her friend. The pain she was experiencing evident on her face.
"I guess I needed the rest, it's been a long week." She managed to say and grimaced as a pain shot through her temple.
Emma sat close to her on the bed and put her hand to her head.
"Hurts huh?"
Steph tried to look away but muttered, "Yeah, forgot my meds too."
"Well, it just so happens I have friends in high places also. I have a prescription for you, come on take a couple and let's get you settled."
Steph managed another weak smile. "Did anyone ever tell you that you're a guardian angel?"
Emma muffled a laugh, smiling into pain filled ice blue eyes. "Not recently, but I don't mind the accolade occasionally. Come on lets settle you down."
The pills had been administered and Emma straightened the bed as Steph was gradually falling into what would be a deep healing sleep. Suddenly she grabbed hold of Emma's hand! "I was in love once Emma! She found someone to replace me it seems, Paul wouldn't tell me who it was, maybe that's for the best."
Emma looked at her friend in sympathy. "Hey, was this what brought on the headache?" she gently asked the very tired woman.
"Not sure, probably. I wanted someone to love me enough to have kept looking, would you think that's too much to ask?" she stopped talking as a deep sleep overtook her, unable to register the quiet answer.
"Oh my precious friend, if I thought it would do you or her any good, then I would tell you. Don't despair Steph she's still looking for you."
Her words echoed hollowly as she stroked the midnight black hair away from Steph’s eyes. Then left her to reflect on who was right in all this.

Chicago Apartment
Emma showered, changed and walked around the apartment spying the odd personal possession that had belonged to the enigmatic Stephanie Gregarious. The new Stephanie Gregarious would fill this place up with all sorts of personal items. She did the same at Liz's, and it had taken on a whole new lived in look after Steph had been there six months. Even Liz wondered if the apartment belonged to her or Steph at times.
Will the original Stephanie appear and wipe out the personality of the new one? Who, to me anyway, is a far more caring person than I fear the old one had been. Although the gentle looks that Steph receives from Ms. Masterson defies that the woman was a control freak to everyone. From what Paul told me that had been some relationship, and had just weathered one hell of a storm.
One thing that made this situation a little brighter was that she would be here in Chicago, and hopefully Liz would agree to live with her too. Thinking of Liz brought a smile to her face as she reflected on that first date together.
Oh they had managed to get through a meal and a discussion over Steph, but they had found it difficult not to spend the time looking into each other's eyes in wonder! Yes, it had been wonder for each of them, neither expecting anything yet wanting the world.
The bar had been difficult. It had concentrated on Steph and rightly so, the story Paul Ironside had woven about her and eventually her relationship with the small blonde had been almost too much for them. The fragility of the small blonde woman in appearance, paled to insignificance when they saw her attempting to communicate with their friend, after all the tragedy that had befallen her and Steph she had a tremendous amount of inner strength.
When Liz eventually went to talk to Louise, Emma had clutched her hand in understanding and gratitude. She knew Liz wanted to be the one to tell the woman as painlessly as possible that she couldn't tell Steph of their previous attachment and maybe never would be able too. Liz had walked away and done what Emma would have had to do, the hurt she was going to inflict was evident on her face. Paul knew that it was his responsibility to Louise to tell her but he looked positively shaken at the thought of hurting his friend more. Liz had looked them over and noted the expressions and left. If Emma had any doubts about the heart of her friend she didn't after that, she knew that this woman was going to be hers no matter what happened!
They had left the others in the bar and gone back to Liz's apartment to talk for a while. Talking had quickly progressed to touching and then inevitably they had gone to bed. Nothing had prepared Emma for the passion and the gentleness Liz had conveyed when they had made love that evening, it was the beginning of what she hoped would be their future. Emma left before Steph returned, mainly because she did have an early morning meeting, and something in a certain lover’s eyes indicated that getting up the next morning would be very close to impossible. Now she was here with a friend who was loved by them both and would continue to be close by and remain a friend for the future too.
The door to Steph’s bedroom opened the tousled looking woman emerged unsteadily making her way towards the lamp in the lounge, which brought a smile to Emma’s face. She looks like hell.
"Hi Steph, how do you feel?"
"I'm fine, I think. Those drugs certainly make me feel like shit!" she grumbled as she slumped onto the sofa.
"How about some water? We can go over all the events of the past few days and get a decent picture of what's going on, what do you say?" Emma knew the drugs had a slight after effect especially on Steph, she had watched the woman battle with them from day one and in essence should still be taking them. Had it not been that she was so stubborn and she fought her own battles with the headaches, paying off generally. Unfortunately all the trauma of the week had been building up and she couldn't tackle them without help this time.
"Yeah sounds good, thanks Emma."
Emma put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"I was thinking Emma, if you are trying to persuade Liz to come to Chicago, why not have her come over for a few days next week and use the apartment. It has everything you need and you have a key. What the hell I can afford whatever bills you tag on at this place." Steph called out to her as she made the coffee.
Emma leaned on the doorjamb and looked at her. "I can't do that Steph it's your place, we will find something, closer to the time I'm going to move away."
"Emma, it's never to early to convince a certain good friend of mine that your intentions are honourable, hey I saw her smile that morning!" Steph smirked at her and had the delight in catching Emma blush.
"Come on Emma, what more of a romantic setting. She loves parks, you have an excellent opportunity to rest your case in comfort." Steph waved her hand to the window and the view.
Suddenly Emma laughed snorting. "You certainly have a very peculiar way of trying to be a matchmaker, but I love it. Yes I accept, Thank you Steph."
Steph laughed herself and winced at the residual pain.
Emma glanced her way and saw the wince, strange the headache should have been gone completely, those drugs usually work on her completely relieving the pain. Looking at her intently. "Are you still in pain Steph?"
Steph shrugged and looked into the concerned grey eyes.
"Just a twinge nothing to worry about, guess it was a hell of a headache."
Emma brought the water and coffee for them as they considered what had happened so far.
"What do you think of Louise Masterson, Steph?" Emma asked innocently.
Steph pondered the remark a small smile played around her lips. "She makes me want to wrap her up in cotton wool and never let anyone or anything hurt her. Strange really, she appears so vulnerable and yet Paul has indicated otherwise. I wish I could do something about this person she loves, obviously they ran off maybe it was the child?"
Emma observed the warmth that Steph conveyed when she talked about Louise. Could it be that this love they have transcended even this obstacle? That would be amazing!
Looking closely at her friend. "Have you considered that maybe you can, by being a good friend to her? It seems you had a strong bond once, maybe you can again."
"I never thought of that Emma, maybe we can be good friends again, time will tell I suppose." She smiled, looking into the coffee cup she held in her hand, deep in thought. Yes, time will tell. How could I have ever gotten this far without these two women? They rescued me they were a lifeboat in a sea of loneliness and uncertainty.
"Emma?" Steph’s voice a surprise after what seemed like an hour in silence, one that Emma hadn't wanted to disturb.
"Yes?" Emma replied suddenly alert.
"I just wanted you to know that I'm grateful for your time with me now, and all the assistance you have given to me in the last twelve months. There is nothing on this earth that I know of to repay you for that friendship, which you freely gave. I hope one day that there will be something I can do!" Steph spoke from her heart.
I have wanted to take her into my arms and comfort her for months, because I have always felt that underneath the fun loving exterior Steph maintains, there is a heart breaking.
"Get over here and give me a hug will you. That can be your repayment to me, although none is necessary, and ever will be!"
Steph moved like lightening to settle her head on the shoulder of her doctor and her friend. Not in defeat, but in grateful acceptance of her need to share comfort with someone for a few minutes, without any self-conscious barriers to that need.
Tomorrow was another day!

Ampolisa
The Ranch
"She's coming here!" Henry Masterson bellowed deafening his eldest daughter.
"Yes Father I invited her. It's not what you think, she's not the same person!" Louise tried to maintain eye contact with her father that usually put him at a disadvantage.
"I don't care what YOU think, THAT woman isn't setting foot in my home ever again, do you hear me!" This time the entire household heard him as he slammed his hand hard on his desk for good measure.
"Father if you don't let her come here, Emily and I will have to move back to the house in town. I want to see her again and I want to be her friend again!" Louise used a weapon she knew would have an immediate effect, Emily.
Henry peered at Louise, his child certainly knew how to make him reconsider, and it was her ace in the pack. "That's blackmail young lady."
"Yeah I know, but you have to let me see her Daddy, it's important. I think you might actually like her too, she's changed so much." Louise cajoled her father.
Father and daughter eyed each other warily, it was a no win situation for either of them really.
"Okay, if she doesn't show any marked differences in her attitude toward you this time around, I'm going to do what she said I could do to her over a year ago when we discussed hurting you."
"What was that Daddy?" Louise smiled as she asked.
"I'm going to string her up to the nearest yardarm!" he shouted.
Louise wasn't sure if he was joking, or they really had that conversation it had been a myriad of conversations to Louise at the time. She was counting on her father liking the new Stephanie Gregarious. Now, to explain to him that he couldn't tell her that their relationship had been anything other than friendship. This was going to be tough on her father, she wouldn't put it past him to let that slip if he had a problem with Steph at any time and wanted to score points in some way.
"Daddy there will be to be some ground rules to this visit." Louise patiently waited for the explosion.
"Ground rules, WHAT the Hell are you talking about?" Henry Masterson couldn't believe his ears.
Louise settled a gentle hand on his shoulder "It's like this Father..."

Art Gallery
Jane had been told Steph was due to arrive with Paul sometime in the morning. Paul tried to advise her of the nature of the visit and the injury Steph had suffered. Shocked was a mild word to describe what Jane felt when he explained the last year of Steph’s life.
Damn! So that's why she's been gone so long.
As the door to the gallery opened she saw Paul but did not see Steph until they entered all the way. Glancing carefully at her employer she noted her casual dress was certainly nothing like the elegant style she usually wore to the gallery. She also noticed the jagged scar on her forehead, although not an angry looking scar it was a very vivid reflection on what the woman had gone through.
Paul smiled at Jane as they approached, gently leading Steph towards the young woman who waited by the reception desk.
"Steph this is Jane West your able assistant here at the gallery. She's been doing a great job in your absence, actually such a good job I arranged for her to give herself a raise in salary to compensate for the extra hours and responsibility."
Paul laughed at the blush that appeared on Jane's face.
Steph looked at the cool poised woman whose composure became unsettled by the ribbing of this man. Jane knew the alter ego well and was surprised when Steph held out her hand. "I know we have met before but as you can see,” Steph pointed to the telltale scar on her forehead. “I appear to have mislaid my memory for the time being, so I'm afraid to me you're a stranger. Sorry if it makes you uncomfortable."
Jane regarded the woman and shook her hand, smiling brightly as she did so. Who is this woman? She actually cares whether I am uncomfortable or not and a handshake too! "No problem at all, sometimes these things happen for good reasons."
"Oh yeah right. Well, you're the first one to say that to me, thanks!" Steph laughed outright at the comment at least it was refreshing.
Jane looked about the gallery "Maybe you should take a look at the current exhibits. I'll make coffee and get the books out for you to look..." Steph put up a hand and stopped her mid sentence.
"Coffee will be great Jane but the books forget it. I'm in no position at the moment to know what would be good or bad, lets just say if my lawyers aren't worried about you then neither am I." Steph grinned and charmed the woman with her easy acceptance of the situation.
"Right, okay coffee it is then." She walked to the office. This woman certainly is different from the one I last saw more than twelve months ago. I like her! What a sad lonely time she must have endured. How terrible.
"I'm going to have a chat with Jane while you reacquaint yourself with YOUR gallery." Steph nodded her head in acknowledgement and started her tour of her gallery.
When Paul arrived at the office he noticed Jane brush her a hand over her eyes. Yes, those stray tears do tend to sneak up on you. I should know.
"It's okay Jane, she might not remember us but she's alive and healthy." He knew Jane had a good working relationship with Steph, which developed into an easygoing friendship.
Jane cleared her voice as she turned to Paul, those errant tears evident in her eyes. "I was thinking about Louise. Was that Steph’s reaction to her too?"
Paul flinched at the comment, swallowing hard as he answered.
"Yes, I'm afraid for both of them it was just like that. She just doesn't remember anything about her life beyond waking up in the hospital in New York. Some things are as clear as day, the doctor indicates that's quite normal. People, places, events, anything personal is just a blank."
"Have you thought about a second opinion? She obviously didn't have access to the money she now does, maybe other doctors can do something for her?" Jane asked him in earnest.
Paul smiled at the comment. "Funny it was the first thing I thought about, until I met her doctor. I realized then that for the past twelve months she has gained very personal care and attention, more than money could buy her."
"What do you mean?" Jane asked perplexed
"She ended up living with the nurse who cared for her in the hospital and the doctor who attended her came by every other day for therapy sessions. All freely given and out of nothing but the generosity of the heart of two special woman."
He was still personally awed that Steph had faired so well she could have ended up in an institution or worse on the streets!
"What's she like now Paul?" Jane looked at the man who had been Steph’s best friend and was devastated by her disappearance.
Paul glanced at the closed circuit monitor on the wall, watching Steph move about the gallery like a stranger.
"The new Stephanie Gregarious is more open, funny, relaxed and warm to just about everyone, she has none of the aggressive streak that Steph often portrayed. In essence she became the woman that deep down Steph always wanted to be but never quite achieved. I think that was due the years she spent being a solitary person because of her work and let's face it her reputation worked against her too. She is the woman I knew was inside and occasionally allowed to experience with my family. I think she was gradually trusting Louise with that part of her personality as well. I just wish we could keep this personality with the memories too."
"What Steph was becoming was better than she had ever hoped to be when she lived with Louise. I think this Steph would have surfaced eventually under Louise’s tutelage don't you?" Jane quietly observed.
"I would like to think so. Speaking of Louise, you know that we can't tell Steph about their relationship. It might have a detrimental effect on her recovery according to the doctor."
"Oh no Paul, how cruel! I had heard of that kind of situation though. God it must be horrendous for Louise, will you be seeing her later?"
Paul smiled briefly "Yeah this afternoon, if she's persuaded Henry to let Steph set foot on the premises." He smirked and they both laughed, knowing that Henry would cave in as soon as green eyes looked into his.
There was a knock on the door and Jane called for the person to enter, Steph walked in a genuine smile of pleasure on her face.
"How many do I own?"

Ranch
Henry Masterson decided to have lunch in his study. Ever since Louise moved back home he found it difficult to refuse her anything however at this moment he wasn't particularly impressed with her. Damn, what a push over everyone must think I am!
"Damn that woman! Why can't Louise just give it up, she isn't worth it."
Muttering as he walked over to the window to look at the garden his late wife planted all those years ago. Didn't I say something similar to her about the idea of that garden? Now look at the scrawny patch, alive with colour, a place of beauty to relax when the strains of the day have caught up with me. Will I think the same thoughts years from now when I see Louise and that woman? For your sake Louise I hope so!
Louise decided to walk with Emily and Argo around the ranch until Paul and Steph arrived. This should be a good way forget the knots in my stomach…running after a dog determined to lay claim to Emily's toys.
"Stop the car!"
Paul hit the brakes as he looked around trying to see what the problem was. He immediately recognized who Steph was staring at, as the antics of a frolicking dog and a young woman running after him with a child toddling fast after both of them came into view.
Just look at the warmth and love in her features as she is watching them. It is as if the scene is calling out to you Steph. I suppose in many ways it is, this is your family! If only you knew that! I can see the loneliness and longing in your face too. Come home to them my friend, they need you.
"Oh no, Argo has taken Emily's toys again. He takes the toys and hides them and Louise tries to stop him. Anytime Emily's toys are missing everyone looks at Argo accusingly wondering where he has secretly hidden them this time. Personally I think the child encourages the dog myself, I think she gets a kick out of the adults running around looking for her toys." He laughed as he scanned the scene with a friendly loving glance, giving Steph a warm smile.
"She looks so young and very happy."
"Louise is a very happy person, she looks for the good in everything and everyone but with her family she shows an even more caring side. Her daughter means everything to her!" What is going on inside that pretty head of yours Steph? Do you remember them?
"Yes, I can see that. Time to go meet the family." She said, little realizing how significant that comment was to the man at her side.
"Right with you on that Steph, let's go meet the family." A twinkle appeared in his eyes, as he drove further into the homestead, catching the eye of Louise as they ventured closer.
Louise settled Emily into her highchair then walked to the veranda waiting for Paul and Steph to get out of the car. "Hi Paul it's good to see you. Steph I'm really pleased you agreed to come over."
"Guess I better visit with Henry for a time, in the study I would imagine." Walking over to Louise he hugged her gently and kissed her cheek. "Be good." He whispered as he went into the house.
Louise managed to stop herself from blushing at his last remark, turning to Steph offering her hand in greeting. The handclasp was firm, which she knew it would be, but this time it held hers a little longer than she expected. Steph gazed deep into green eyes looking for something familiar. Those are eyes you could get lost in. Why can't I remember? I so want to know you Louise. I don't want to be lost anymore…please find me.
"Thanks for the invitation looks like a great place to bring up a family. I saw you as we drove up, with the dog and the child."
"Ah yes Argo loves to take Emily's toys and I'm sure she lets him."
"That's just what Paul said. Are you going to introduce me to your family?" Steph smiled genuinely as she asked for the introduction.
Louise gave her a shy grin, motioning her forward.
If only you knew my love, this is your family too, and one day you are going to know that, you just have too! Come back to me Steph.
Emily was throwing pieces of cookie at Argo hitting him on all parts of his body. The dog immediately started wagging his tail profusely at the sight of his owner then bounding over to Steph jumping up at her in excitement.
Steph laughed merrily at the dog and it's apparent happiness with her presence. He must have known me pretty well in the old days.
Louise looking at the scene as she picked up Emily couldn't stop the tears from flowing. She saw her dog happily doing what she wanted to do the first time she saw Steph, bowl her over in a hug of sheer happiness that she was alive.
"This is my daughter Emily, she's thirteen months old and creating havoc as she's starting to walk. I don't know what I'm going to do when she can really walk, I am afraid she and Argo will create even more mischief." Louise grinned lovingly at her daughter.
Steph glanced from the dog, to the mother and daughter. I can feel the warmth and understanding she possesses. Perhaps it wouldn't be so hard to have this old life back, if I could have friends like Paul and Louise.
"Hi Emily,” Steph placed a hand on the child's head and ruffled her blonde hair.
“She's cute. Looks a lot like you, except for the eyes." Steph hoping that was okay as an opening comment. She hadn't been exposed to children much and none at all in the last year. Having always been told to say children looked cute even if you wondered which window they had been thrown out of because they were so damn ugly. Not that this kid was, far from it she was cute!
Louise glanced at her daughter who was engrossed in watching the dark stranger in front of her. "Yes she does, which I'm eternally grateful for! Some children can be down right ugly for a while can't they? The eyes though are a bonus they remind me of someone I love a great deal."
I cannot believe this guy left Louise when it is so clear she still loves him deeply. He really must have been some kind of jerk. Idiot! Maybe one day I will know the full story. "Must be her daddies eyes then."
"Yes." She replied flatly looking away with the last comment.
"Can I hold her?" Steph tentatively asked, hearing the despondent note from the blonde.
Louise shot her a brilliant smile that defied the previous stance she had taken.
"Yeah sure, she's not heavy."
I feel such joy! I never thought the day would come when I would be giving our baby to Steph to hold. I can't be dreaming, can I? No, this is real! Having her here with me, and our child is worth all the pain I've endured over the last year.
The child went to Steph meekly, she didn't always like strangers, but it was obvious this stranger was different!
Steph walked over to the veranda with Argo trotting behind her. It is breaking my heart to watch this but I can't help myself. I've had this dream so many times in the last year and now it is a reality, for a few minutes we are a family. Oh Steph I love you so, come home to your family please.
"I'll get us something to drink if you wouldn't mind keeping these two company for a few minutes. Is coffee okay with you?"
Steph turned and grinned. "Yes, thank you. Emily and I are getting aquatinted so it isn't a problem. Argo appears to know me so I would say we are getting along just fine Louise." Steph replied happily.
Louise, her heart beating fast and her emotions in turmoil walked unsteadily into the house, leaning on the door as it was closed. My god I love that woman. Please God, if you are by any chance listening to this, please let her come back to me! Even if I have to start all over again, it will be worth it I promise.
* * *
“Come on Henry you need to go and meet her. She knows you're in the house and it would look very inhospitable if you didn't at least acknowledge her presence in your home.”
“Oh, okay but I'm telling you she better not try any smart stuff or I will kick her behind right off my property! No one hurts my little girl like that woman did and gets away with it! Have I made myself clear?”
“Henry, just give her a chance please. I think you will like the new Steph. Please?”
Both men with a scotch in hand walked towards the veranda and saw Steph holding Emily, pointing things out to the child. Argo was chewing on a bone at her feet. It all looked the peaceful domestic scene in most homes, but this was different!
As Paul pushed the door open he heard his friend talking to the child…
"Look Emily, over there is the barn, it's a large barn too. One day I bet you will cause your Mom and Grandfather some very bad times when you can run around this place, lots of places to hide. What do you say Argo, do you think you two will like playing hide-n-go-seek with everyone?"
Henry was fascinated with the picture he saw and realized that his daughter had been right, this wasn't the Stephanie Gregarious he knew, it was a totally different person. His Granddaughter nestled in her arms, as she talked amiably to her completely at ease, warmth filled her voice as she spoke to the child.
Clearing his voice he announced himself. "Stephanie, pleased you could visit us again."
Paul looked at the man in surprise he thought it would be difficult to get Henry to pass the time of day with her, never mind instigate the welcome.
Turning, Steph gazed at Paul and then to the older man who was very distinguished and handsome bearing a clear resemblance to Emily. "Thanks for allowing me to visit. I'm afraid I don't remember you but I assume you're Louise’s father."
"Yes I am can you see the family resemblance’?"
Steph cocked her head regarding him carefully. "No, but your granddaughter certainly appears to have the shape of your eyes, I think?"
Henry Masterson felt himself warming to this woman. She is so different from the woman I met last year in my home. There is no threat in her body language, no arrogance in her voice she is a young woman enjoying a day out. Yes, I think I do like her very much. Oops, better not let Louise know…I can hear ‘I told you so' already!
"Well, I certainly hope she has some features from me I would certainly be disappointed if she hadn't."
“What's happened to Louise?” Paul said fearful of a problem already.
"It's okay Paul, should be back shortly she went for something to drink." Steph replied and turned to the child in her arms. "This little lady needs changing anyway I hope she comes back soon."
As if on cue Louise turned up and noted that all three adults and her daughter were laughing. Maybe God is listening to my prayers today. Hearing Steph’s last comment made her smile.
"I guess I had better change her before she becomes uncomfortable, Steph give her to me and I'll take her inside." Opening her arms for the woman to place the child in them.
Steph looking somewhat embarrassed that Emily was clutching to her refusing to go to her mother. "Guess she wants me to come too."
Louise smiled briefly, "I guess she does, this way."
Walking into the house and going upstairs they entered a large airy room that had toys everywhere and glorious views of the property. "She will love this view when she's older it's beautiful."
"Daddy wanted only the best for his first Grandchild. Mind you at the rate he's going, she's going to be spoiled rotten."
Steph shook her head "No, I think you will stop that, you seem very level headed with your life Louise."
Louise stared into those familiar ice blue eyes that had become reflective. "What are you going to do now Steph?"
Steph was surprised by the question. "Oh I don't know, this and that I guess. It's strange to live one type of life and then be given another one that is totally different. I feel like I'm window shopping and that it's all a dream. Does that sound strange to you?"
Louise paused a moment and then with a serious expression answered. "No, I understand that point of view. In fact, I feel like that myself sometimes, it will fall into place...trust me." It was a tentative step towards forging that friendship again.
Steph looking at the woman, locking blue on green slowly smiled shaking her head in an effort to clear it of the confusion.
"I trust you Louise Masterson."

New York City
Moving On
"I can't believe it Steph, you're giving us the apartment in Chicago?" Liz exclaimed.
"Why not, I don't feel like it's home for me, I'm not comfortable there."
"God Steph it's worth a fortune! Rent it out or sell it?" Liz was still reeling from Steph’s generosity.
Walking over to her friend she placed a hand on her shoulder. "Liz, you're starting a new life with Emma. It is going to be difficult with Simon still not responding to treatment. I'm giving you both the opportunity to at least, when you can, relax together in comfort. Liz you are my best friend, I would like to acknowledge it. Look what you gave to me a year ago!"
Liz closed her hand on the one on her shoulder and squeezed it understanding.
"I once told you, that whatever I did for you it was because I knew it was the right thing to do, I have never regretted that. In fact it was the best decision I ever made, do you realize that? You made me focus on something Steph, for the first time, I’d been drifting for so long! Look what I gained, a best friend who I love dearly and the love of my life. Hell, what more do I need from you?"
Steph smiled wickedly "How about a luxury apartment in Chicago, for starters call it a honeymoon present."
Liz laughed outright, "How do I win with you?"
"You never have yet, why not accept defeat gracefully, call Emma and stop her from taking out some stupid lease on a place?"
Liz moved towards the phone and as she dialed the number she looked into ice blue eyes that lit up in merriment. "I love you Steph, you know that right?"
"Yeah I know that, you tell me in lots of ways everyday."
Liz grinned at her as she waited for the connection to her lover.
Steph walked into her bedroom and looked around. Everything in this room is familiar it is my home strange as that sounds. I felt safe here. The apartment in Chicago doesn't fit, I wonder if it ever did? The apartment in Ampolisa feels the same to me nothing personal saying it belongs to me! They are nothing more than places to stay like a hotel room. Surely, I must have felt at home somewhere? Where? Where is my home?
Her hand strayed to the key, which she had threaded on a gold chain round her neck.
It didn't open the apartments in Chicago or Ampolisa or the gallery for that matter. What the hell does it open? Is this the missing link that I need to answer all my questions to find out who I am? Is that where my home is? Where my heart is? Or is it a part of me I can no longer find, like the woman I loved enough to buy an engagement ring? The woman is no longer attainable, that is what Paul said. I trust Paul he hasn't let me down yet and somehow I don't think he ever will.
Steph continued her pacing of the room and wondered what she would do next.
Life has dealt me some interesting cards lately! Here I am a wealthy woman who can literally buy anything I want and yet I was happy in this mediocre apartment in downtown New York. But, it was my friends that made this home for me. I need to move on as indeed they are doing…is Chicago the place for me? Maybe. It would be convenient and I could buy another place or rent one until I know where I belong. Will I ever really belong anywhere any more? Paul lived in Chicago, Liz and Emma would be there too. Something is missing but I can't quite get a handle on it, or maybe I am afraid to grasp it because I don't think it is attainable and will only lead to heartbreak. Even here, surrounded by dear friends, I feel so lost and alone. Is this how I am destined to live out my life? Unconnected forever!
A knock on the door brought Steph out of her deep thoughts.
"Emma says thanks, and she will say that properly when she comes over later."
"What's wrong?"
"Do you know Liz I honestly don't know? I have everything in my grasp but..."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Talk about what?"
"What or who it is that causes you so much uncertainty?"
"I know you, Emma and Paul are all in Chicago. I want to belong but I don't feel that's the right place for me! I want to find out what door this key opens and then maybe I can find out where I belong! Although, I believe I already know." Steph struggled to be coherent.
"Where do you think you belong Steph?"
"I belong with Louise Masterson! She makes me feel at home in a way I've never felt since the accident.” Peering at Liz for understanding she continued. “When I was with her at her father's ranch it was crazy to feel so comfortable because I couldn't remember any of them. The love she radiated was so potent it was unbelievable and I wanted her to love me like that."
Love is indeed a potent force, transcending even the harshest of barriers. "Guess you're going back to Ampolisa?"
"I was thinking about it, would you mind?"
"Steph, if you're happy I'm happy, what about Louise?"
"She wanted me to come back as soon as possible. I don't know what's going to happen but I want to try it out." Steph, grinning her eyes lighting up in anticipation.
"Go for it my friend what have you got to lose?"
Maybe nothing. Maybe everything.
They walked out of the bedroom as the door opened and Emma walked in carrying Chinese take out by the aroma coming from the packages.

Steph spent the next week putting her affairs in New York in order. Arranging with her lawyer that the apartment in Chicago be given to Liz on a free rate basis, along with the utility expenses, which her private assets would cover. She contacted Paul and arranged to visit him and his family the next week, she wanted answers, and he was the only one who could probably provide them.
Then there was the matter of Louise Masterson and her friendly overtures. Just how valid had they been? Shouldn't I try to find out first before I go there? Looking around the room she found some writing paper and a pen, yes exactly what she needed. I will send Louise a letter.
Sitting in a comfortable spot at the dining table she set about her task.

Ampolisa
A Letter To The Teacher
Louise Masterson was enjoying working part time at the school again. The principal felt it was advisable for her take it easy for the first semester so she wasn't involved in any late sessions.
The tragic events that prevented her from working for nearly two years were practically forgotten by many in the community. Snide comments from certain older boys were severely reprimanded by the principal who was adamant that Louise not be upset by that kind of language. Many of her students relished a Masterson class and had missed her gentle kind ways.
As she drove closer to her home and family Louise smiled to herself. Emily and Argo will be happy to see me. Daddy will be either ecstatic if Emily has been trouble with a capital T, or reluctant to give her up if she's been good. This is a wonderful afternoon too, ideal for sitting on the veranda and watching the world go by slowly.
Walking into the house she was greeted by an enthusiastic Argo who wagged his tail continuously. "Argo we will go out shortly let me get in the house will you?" she laughed at the dog.
Henry hearing his daughter arrive walked from the sun room, where Emily usually napped in the afternoon carrying his small charge.
"Hi Daddy has she been good?" She placed a gentle kiss on his cheek and took her daughter from him.
Henry smiled, "Oh sure just like her mother, headstrong." Grimacing in mock anger and walked towards his study, now his baby sitting duties where over he could enjoy a decent scotch.
Louise watched her father leave, as it was his custom, she could never criticize his scotch in the late afternoon. He was wonderful with his granddaughter and it brought a sense of peace to Louise, that they had finally resolved all their differences.
"Come on darling lets go and see what Argo and you can upset today shall we?"
Cuddling her daughter to her as the child giggled happily.
She walked with her daughter and Argo to the nearest paddock, watching as the dog frolicked and played, her daughter toddling energetically forward to match the dog in it's antics.
This was a time of quiet reflection for Louise, she had often come here before Emily was born, looking out into the open spaces before her, and it often soothed her when she was anxious about the birth. Now she was contemplating another problem Stephanie Gregarious! Well when hasn't Steph been a problem to me in some way or another in the past two years! Always a welcome problem though and never one I want on anyone else's shoulders. Sometimes I just want to take her in my arms and beg her to stay no matter what consequences. But, I haven't, and won't as long as the doctors recommended restraint. Oh God how I miss those arms around me, especially when things looked bad or I just needed a hug for the hell of it! I might never know that again. My heart calls to me to break all the taboos and do what I want and not what I am being told to do. Has it been two weeks since Steph was last here? Yeah it has, and my heart is sad with this continued separation. The love we share is worth the wait and I will wait forever if necessary, she will always be worth it, always!
Her memories flooded over her of a time she was with Steph the week before they had the disagreement that separated them.
A key in the door indicated to Louise that Steph was home, she'd had to leave on urgent business in Chicago but had promised to return the very next day and true to her word she'd done just that. The house wasn't the same anymore without her and Louise had missed her like crazy. Loneliness prevailed, and now that she heard the key in the lock the loneliness disappeared as if by magic.
“Hi I'm home.” Steph called out in her distinctive voice, Louise’s heart thudded at familiarity it brought with it.
“I'm in the kitchen.”
Louise heard Steph dump her overnight bag in the hall, footsteps echoing until she felt strong hands reach around her waist, a tender kiss placed on her neck in a homecoming welcome. “I've missed you darling.” Steph breathed into her soft fragrant skin.
Louise couldn't help the smirk that crossed her lips at the feel of moist lips on her neck, meandering upwards until she was face to face with the woman she loved. “I missed you too, how was the trip?”
“Couldn't be better, everything went exactly as planned.” Steph said, placing her forehead against her friend's. “How have you been?” noticing the dark circles around Louise’s eyes.
“Fine, but I guess I've got used to you being here with me.” Louise gave her a sheepish grin.
Steph smiled and traced a finger over the dark circles. “Ah, so that's why those are evident? Well, tonight you go to bed early with no protest okay?”
Louise wrapped her arms around the taller woman and gazed deeply into the ice blues, which held loving warmth, only she was allowed to see. “IF you tuck me in then I won't protest too much.”
“I think I can oblige in that area Ms. Masterson, I'm at your complete disposal.”
“Will you always be at my disposal?” Louise asked needing a verbal affirmation of what her heart already knew.
“Forever and ever my love, count on it.” Steph said seriously and placed warm lips on Louise’s sealing her pledge in the only way she knew.
But life hadn't quite worked out that way had it?
The young woman watched her daughter and dog at play for over an hour until Mrs. Collins beckoned her from the house indicating it was time for Emily to have something to eat. Walking back to the house, she realized once again this place had restored her sense of balance for another day.
The evening meal with her father had been quiet since Emily had been settled into her bed a couple of hours earlier. One thing her daughter was very good at was sleeping just like her mother given the opportunity.
Henry Masterson looked at his daughter observing her smile faintly at some memory she recalled. He had refrained from talking about Stephanie Gregarious after she left, not really knowing what to say. The woman had changed, no longer the confident bitch Henry had seen in the early days, she was far removed from that. He might have even gone so far as to say compassionate and gentle, especially when she was around his Granddaughter, funny old World this was.
He cleared his voice. "When is Ms. Gregarious coming back to visit us again?"
Louise looked mildly surprised at her father's question.
"I'm not sure, haven't heard from her since she went back. I was kind of expecting a call or maybe hoping she would just turn up, you know me Daddy ever the optimist."
Her father stared at his plate then back at Louise. "I was wrong Louise, forgive me?"
"Forgive you? For what?"
"I judged her as usual, without waiting to find out what had happened to her, I think she's changed too. If you want her here any time, you just call her and get her back, you hear me?" Henry moved out of his chair striding in the direction of his study.
Louise was left to ponder her father's statement, but not for long as Henry came back into the room holding a letter.
"This came for you earlier I forgot about it until we had that conversation it's from New York." He handed her the letter and left again.
Louise turned the letter over a few times contemplating the handwriting she would have known anywhere. Steph hadn't forgotten her… ripping open the envelope in her haste to find out what prompted a letter.
Dear Louise,
How are you, Emily, your father and of course Argo?
I have been in New York attending to my affairs, Liz and Emma will move to Chicago next week with Emma’s son Simon. I'm hoping that they will find a solution to his illness and that everything works out.
I'm going to see Paul and his family in Chicago next week, he has asked me repeatedly to visit. Therefore I thought it a good time to do so as I'm clearing up my affairs there too. You may think that strange, but to be honest I hadn't felt at home in Chicago when I went there. Seems odd as most of my life was spent in and around the city when I wasn't traveling, yet it isn't home.
Paul wants me to talk to my old boss in the government to fill in the gaps that he can't, I have considered this and I don't think it's a good idea right now, what do you think?
This is so unlike the Steph of old but so like the new Steph, and to make it even more poignant she is asking for my opinion.
I know that might be a little presumptuous of me to ask for your opinion but I feel that I can trust your judgment, didn't we agree on that at the ranch?
Which brings me to the main reason for the letter… I wondered if you would be happy to show me Ampolisa again? I have the apartment but I want to know more about the place. It feels more like home than Chicago and New York was only my home while Liz was there, but for some reason I'm drawn to Ampolisa.
I guess this is a really weird letter and request.
Oh no my love, it is the only request that you could ever make. One I will enjoy and fulfil whatever you ask...!
I thought maybe we could get to know each other again, maybe as we had before, I know I'm different in many ways to the person you knew in the past, but I would enjoy trying to capture some good times together, what do you think?
I will wait to hear from you.
Best regards
Stephanie
Louise cried at the humility in the short sentence at the end of the letter.
Folding it carefully in the palm of her hand, holding it to her heart she smiled through the tears.
Oh Steph I would love to get to know you as we did before, and maybe we can. By God I'm going to try.
Louise walked over to the writing table in the sun room, which was covered with Emily's toys and proceeded to answer her forgetful lover in the only way she knew, from the heart.

From The Mouth Of Babes
Paul Ironside stalked around his house, his wife Fay looked at him in despair. It was only their friend due at the house, what the hell could be making him edgy?
Paul looked out onto the walled private gardens and watched his two children playing happily. He wanted to watch his children grow and vowed to do so, painting very little in the years after Grace was born. It was only because his best friend was assumed missing that he spent so much time away from them in the last year. I missed so much… Grace starting nursery school and Jonathan's first steps, would I ever regret it? No! Never! Nor would Fay ever blame Steph for unwittingly causing me to be away from them all those months on wild goose chases. Steph is family too!
Hearing a car drive up, he went towards the large bay window overlooking the curving drive. He watched as Steph stepped out of the cab looking over the large rambling house. A small smile of approval appeared on her face easing the tension he felt somewhat.
Fay looked at her husband engrossed in his window watching of his friend. Smiling gently she went towards the door to welcome Steph back into their home at last.
Steph gazed into the kind brown eyes that sparkled in welcome as she was waved into the house.
"Steph, I'm Fay, welcome to our home." Fay’s tone was welcoming and warm.
Steph grinned at the woman and held out her hand in friendly greeting.
"Hello Fay, Paul has told me lots about you and the children."
"I'm pleased about that, because Grace hasn't given us any peace since she knew you were coming to visit." Fay laughed and motioned her to the large lounge.
Paul shifted from his position at the window moving in on Steph to give her a welcoming hug.
"Thanks for coming over."
Steph looked at him and saw the tension her visit had caused in him.
"Hey Paul, I wanted to meet the family, especially my Goddaughter!"
"Take my word for it this is the most peace you will have all day, once they both see you it will be like an explosion of noise. I hope you can handle it?"
Steph smirked "Sure a piece of cake." Then stared at the parents who both shook their heads in laughter. "Did I manage before?"
Fay looked at the happiness on her husband's face, then watched the less than confident woman in front of her, a pleasant surprise she is human after all! But I always knew that! There was none of the arrogance and supreme confidence that she had previously shown. Yes, without a doubt this woman before her was different.
"Actually no, you never had the opportunity. Grace wasn't old enough to make those demands on you and now there are two of them, I'm afraid it's a foregone conclusion."
Steph smiled openly this time "Well, I'll look forward to it. Let's go get them Paul."
Walking over to Paul she placed her hand on his arm and he looked at her all the apprehension disappearing replaced by a warm feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Several hours later two worn out children were happily about to go to bed.
Grace Ironside walked over to Steph and sat on her lap, without asking but knowing that it was okay, well she'd done it before when she was a child hadn't she?
Looking closely at Steph and placing a finger on the scar on her forehead she asked her question.
"Does Auntie Louise like you with a scar Steph?" The child asked guilelessly.
Steph looked taken aback at the question, not that the child had asked about the scar but that Louise Masterson should be prominent in it.
Paul looked around the room in embarrassment. Fay looked over at her daughter and thought, from the mouth of babes.
"Does she Auntie Steph? Because she will have to paint you like it now, not like she painted you before."
Suddenly Paul grabbed his daughter from Steph’s lap slightly embarrassed, giving her a look of apology.
"Hey young lady Steph wants a rest from you and your questions, come on to bed."
Grace grinned at her father, waving at Steph as her father hauled her to bed with Jonathan falling in behind hugging a worn out teddy bear.
"I'm sorry about that Steph, kids never know when to keep quiet." Fay remarked quickly.
"It's okay Fay but…I'm kinda puzzled. Why did she mention Louise?" Steph quietly asked her brow furrowed in concentration.
From the doorway Paul quickly intervened. "She knew that you and Louise had been good friends, and she was around when Louise painted some of the work with you in them. In fact one caught the eye of the Simpson’s, the reason we finally found you."
Steph looked at the couple in the room and saw them pass a silent message to each other Hell what did she have to lose anyway.
"Was the ring I bought for Louise Masterson?"
Fay gasped as Paul looked at his best friend in distress; he had never lied to her and didn't want to now.
"Paul to the best of my knowledge you have never deliberately hidden anything from me but I want an answer to my question and I want an honest one!"
Fay glanced at her husband, taking the bull by the horns she replied on his behalf. "Yes. We believe you did buy the ring for Louise, you and she had fallen in love about two years ago, when she found out she was having a baby you left her..."
Paul gave his wife a reprimanding stare as he quickly interceded. "Fay! The doctors told us it could be bad for Steph if we divulged the past."
Steph leapt into the conversation. "Fay, carry on. It's my life we hold over a precipice here, and I want to know the truth. Now more than at any other time, please?"
"You went abroad for five months and came back a couple of weeks before Louise gave birth. You reaffirmed your love for each other but had to go to New York on business, the rest is history as they say." Fay gave out the facts, providing few details, which would be for others to administer.
"I never gave her the ring why?" Steph had gone into shock, unable to assimilate the fact that she and Louise Masterson had been lovers, why hadn't anyone told me?
"We don't know, maybe you just never got the chance. It was hectic and traumatic times for you both." Paul admitted reluctantly.
"I don't remember anything Paul even after this confession. It's still a blank, albeit another piece of the jigsaw is coming into place. Maybe that's why I was drawn to her when we met?" Steph’s original shock at the statement making way for her astonishment, yet it made sense to her in an obscure way.
"She will always be there for you Steph no matter what happens, or how you two react to each other now, she cares about you!" Paul looked at the suddenly ravaged face of his friend she was clearly hurting.
"I don't want her to know about this conversation. I will apprise her myself at the right time, will you help me out on that?" Steph looked at them both for support and understanding.
"Yes." They replied in unison.
"Well in that case I could do with a drink, I don't know about you two?" Steph tried to inject a little humour into the situation.
Fay laughed, as did Paul, leaving to fetch the beers for him and Steph and a white wine for his wife. Hell, that went better than expected. Wonder what goes on in that pretty head of hers? Because she sure as hell gives nothing away, never did before and doesn't now. Maybe some things never change.
Steph was urged to stay the night, readily agreeing, as they talked about old haunts to try and fill in gaps. Then generally chatting about art and what plans each had for the future. Steph felt comfortable here, not threatened in anyway, very safe. Knowing that the Ironside family would always be great friends to her as she placed them on the list with Liz and Emma.
Lying awake in the guestroom, she pondered this new facet in her previous life.
So, Louise and I had been lovers. Well I could go with that news no problem in the future, Louise Masterson certainly is a lovely looking woman, not only that but she has a wonderful personality to match her looks. Now why didn't I ask that question earlier? How had the Simpson’s brought me up in conversation? If I’d gone to the exhibition I would have seen the paintings and perhaps found this information out earlier. God it had taken a child to reach that delicate point. Thinking too much always gave her a headache and tonight wasn't any different, this time however she had the pills Emma had prescribed for her. Taking a couple from her bag she swallowed them and re-settled herself back in the bed.
I wonder what it felt like to hold you Louise? What plans did we have for the future? Why we quarreled over the fact you carried a child? Who was the child's father? What sort of woman was I when you fell in love with me? Will you love the new me? Questions kept churning in her mind until the pain from her headache increased. Steph almost vomited with the searing pain. It has never been this bad before, maybe she should tell Emma. Then again Emma has too many other things that require her attention at the moment, the move to Chicago, settling Simon at the new hospital and she and Liz in the apartment. No, I will leave it, must have been all the questions and answers I've been getting lately, bound to screw up a head from time to time.
The pills started to kick in as she gradually slipped into a deep healing sleep.
* * *
A Fresh Start
Steph agreed to help Liz and Emma move into the apartment at the end of the week. Her time with the Ironside family had strengthened her commitment to understand the person she used to be, and not shy away. Although she knew possibly the most important part of her old life now, it had not helped in her recovery, merely another series of events that painted a picture, which had no physical life to her way of thinking.
Now she was helping her friends to move onto a new life, in a new city and hopefully a cure for Simon.
Emma had been able to secure the bed after agreeing to do enhanced hours when necessary. She knew that could prove to be a very bad move, especially with her new romance becoming a major factor in her life. She couldn't afford to keep Simon at the hospital without the added hours but she hadn't discussed this with Liz, hoping she would understand. Unable to conceive of losing Liz after having just finding her and the happiness it brought into her life.
Liz was wary about the move when it finally came to the day that the apartment in New York had to be vacated but she went ahead with it like she did on most things with her heart leading. She worried about Steph, but what did she have to worry about the woman, it wasn't as if she ever had to work again! Then again she was terrified that her relationship with Emma might flounder. It was still so new and with the issue of Simon still to be resolved she certainly hoped this new treatment here did the trick. Emma would be devastated if it proved as ineffective as it had been in New York.
All three friends converged pretty much at the same time that Friday morning to supervise their personal stuff into the huge luxury apartment, one room had been given over to Steph for her use and the storage of her personal items in the apartment, which in essence had been few.
They worked together well their friendship forged under unusual circumstances and the enthusiasm and energy that bounded around them was electric.
Finally having some of the furniture in place, they settled down for a much-needed refreshment break.
"When do you plan on traveling to Ampolisa Steph?"
Steph looked at the twinkling eyes of her friend, piercing her with those ice blue eyes, which were glowing with a friendly warmth, "I thought I would fly down there tomorrow Liz, it seems appropriate, nothing much here for me is there?"
"Hey who you calling nothing! I'm sure Paul would think the same!" Liz responded in mock indignation.
Steph chuckled. "Oh yeah, forgot about you!"
Liz cuffed the tall woman on the chin noticing her wince slightly.
"You okay?" she whispered to her friend.
Steph saw the concern in her friend's eyes and smiled. "Oh sure, just a slight twinge get them now and again, don't worry my friend."
Liz wasn't totally convinced but knew her friend well enough not to argue, at the moment anyway. "Okay lover, but…" she trailed off the meaning evident.
Steph grinned back at her and nodded.
They stopped talking when Emma walked back into the room with more drinks.
"Was it something I said? Or do you want me to leave you two alone for a while?" she smirked at them.
Liz blushed as Steph returned her smirk. "Hey, you have my best girl for life, don't you think I can have a few moments of quiet conversation now and then?"
"Yeah. If I thought there was anything under handed going on I would personally make sure you would go on a list of the most sadistic therapist in the Country." Emma joked back.
"Hey come on there's nothing going on Emma, you know what she's like always taking the rise out of me." Liz pleaded with her lover, knowing that the banter between her lover and best friend could easily get out of hand; it had in the past.
Steph and Emma looked at the pleading looks they were getting from a concerned Liz, turning to each other laughing.
"One day Gregarious you and I are going to have a discussion without the intervention from our very close friend here." Emma smiled at Steph.
"One day Phantos I will enjoy that."
Liz let out a breath she hadn't realized she held and smiled weakly back at them, unable to suppress the groan that thought brought about.
"When do you start work at the hospital Liz?" Steph asked her friend.
"I have a week to sort myself out and this lady too. Emma starts on Monday, therefore I get to see how everything ticks here." Liz glanced to Emma grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"Oh yeah, but you get some time off to relax too, you don't even need to go anywhere. You can sit here and watch the ducks go by." Emma teased her lover.
"Sounds good to me, if I'd know you were alone I might have postponed my trip away." Steph ribbed her friend.
"Great, so both of you think I'm going to be doing nothing for the week. Well I can tell…" Emma reaching down kissing her into silence, satisfactorily cutting off any further remark.
"My love I never thought anything of the kind, and even if you did, you deserve it!" Picking up Liz's right hand, placing a tender kiss on the palm.
Steph looked at the two women so obviously in love. It tore at her heart to know that she had participated in this kind of love herself, but now it was lost to her.
Wasn't that something Paul said about the love that Louise had lost, she had faith in its return? Maybe Louise did, would it be good enough?
A hand was placed on her shoulder, as Emma looked down at her with concern in her grey eyes. Having seen a forlorn look on their friends face, and a deep sadness engulf her features. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Steph shrugged. "Nothing to tell really, I was thinking what it must be like to be in love."
Emma looked at Liz and they shared a brief smile.
"I'd sure hope my friend that thinking about love wasn't going to make me look so sad." She gently chided.
Self-consciously she looked at her friends and realized she needed to control her expressions. "Maybe I'd like to be on the receiving end of some of the love you two share. I get the feeling though that until I can remember something more, it's just going to be a pipe dream."
"Dreams come true Steph, just look at me!" Liz blushed as she realized she had spoken aloud in a dreamy fashion.
"Ah, my friend but your pipe dream was a short distance away. Mine seems to be a never ending tunnel." Steph stated in genuine anguish.
"Well, I think we three should go to the nearest bar and get drunk for old times sake what do you think?" Emma turned to the two of them.
"Yes!" they both answered. Collecting their outer clothes, proceeding to the nearest bar, which was called appropriately Simon’s bar.

A Reply
Steph saw the envelope addressed to her on the hall table obviously someone had already been up and about. The smell of freshly brewed coffee confirmed that assumption.
Picking up the envelope she looked at the sender’s name, in bold writing the sender was Ms. L Masterson. Turning the envelope over in her hand, wanting to rip it open, but thought better of it, she needed to be alone to read this one.
Wondering if anyone had seen her she quickly went back towards her bedroom, just as she opened the door a voice from the kitchen doorway said, "I think coffee with a letter heralding news would help don't you?" Emma gently quirking her eyebrows in genuine pleasure motioned her friend towards the kitchen area.
Steph turned back, clutching the letter behind her. A small smile appeared, as she nodded her head and walked back towards her friend.
Emma gave her the coffee and a look of understanding crossed her face.
"Thanks Emma, see you in a little while okay?" Steph walked back towards her room.
"No problem my friend."
Steph sat by the window overlooking the lake and watched the ducks waddle on the bank side. Sighing she turned back to her letter. I hope you want to see me as much as I want to see you Louise Masterson!
Tearing open the seam of the envelope she pulled out the letter.
Dear Steph,
Glad to hear from you, wasn't sure how long it would be!
Emily, father and Argo are well, to put it bluntly all are very well and each has their own share of mischief together, even my father!
I returned to work recently on shorter hours than previously. It will take me sometime to get back to a routine, and doing the full hours mean I have little time with Emily. Although I will have to decide soon if I want to go back to teaching full time, or give it up and accept my father's generosity and paint from the ranch. As well as a full-time mother to my child, you wouldn't like to help me with that decision would you
Oh Louise if only I could.
I hope Liz, Emma and her son Simon have now settled in Chicago. Paul tells me you have given them access to your apartment there. I haven't seen it however I hear it is a beautiful place, just in the right position overlooking the park. Give them my best regards when you next meet up, although we didn't have time to get to know each other, I feel that they are a very important part of your life now. That being so naturally I want to get to know them better. Maybe I could visit Chicago sometime and visit?
Louise they would love you to visit, just as I would.
I'm glad that Emma's son is obtaining as good a care as they gave you. I only hope it works out for them as illness can be a very expensive process.
God Louise you have just given me an idea, thank you, thank you. Steph smiled openly now she was enjoying this letter enormously.
I think you're right not to talk to the government people yet! Maybe you need to familiarize yourself with other memories first. Become more comfortable with other surroundings, but eventually you will have to face that part of your life and if you need a hand to hold, well you go ahead and ask.
Louise you can hold my hand anytime makes me want to get in touch with my old boss now. Steph smirked.
As to your question of touring Ampolisa, no problem when you come I'm here for you okay?
You and I Stephanie, are going to restart a good friendship, and yes I hope we can rekindle what we once lost, trust me!
I'm waiting for you to come home.
Best regards,
Louise
Steph held the paper to her heart it had pounded out a heavy beat at the end of the letter. I'm going to come home Louise. I'm coming home today!
She placed the letter on her bedside cabinet, collected her cold coffee and with the largest grin imaginable went to see what was for breakfast.
Noting their friend's happy countenance and the fact that she couldn't stop smiling, the lover’s glanced at each other and smiled along with her.
If that's what a letter from Louise Masterson does to you Steph. We had better get her to write you plenty, because I'd rather see you looking like this than how you have looked for the past few weeks. Liz thought to herself and then gripped Emma’s hand as they appreciated their friend's happiness.
"What time is the flight today Steph?" Emma asked innocently.
Steph continued to grin from ear to ear as she swallowed her cereal. "At noon. I will be in Ampolisa by three. I need to see my lawyer first. What time is it now, please?"
"It's nine thirty. Why do you need to see the lawyer, I thought you had everything cleared up here?"
"Oh so did I, but something in Louise’s letter reminded me of a gift I want to give to someone. What a wonderful day don't you think?"
The happiness they saw just lit the place up and them as well.
Steph moved out of the kitchen to get ready for her trip and the appointment at the lawyers, which she still had to make. Guess that is the privilege of money, he isn't going to turn me away.
"Got to move girls, hell of a day!" Steph literally danced out of the room.
Emma looked at Liz and they both burst out laughing.
"Guess it was a good letter."
"Yeah I guess it was." Liz replied.
Emma looked at her lover, a sensual smile played over her lips. "I wonder if I could interest you in a little fun in a certain room across the hall."
Liz blushed profusely. "You can interest me in that type of fun any day of the week, but especially today." Pulling the slightly taller woman to her, kissing her soundly. Liz moved out of her chair with her arms wrapped around her own personal doctor as they eventually managed to make it to the bedroom, but not before all their clothes had ended up in the hallway.
Steph an hour later came out of her room all packed and ready to go, saw the clothes in the hall and heard faint sounds from the master bedroom. Guess now is not a time to interrupt. I'll call them from the lawyers later.
Smiling from the letter and the obvious happiness of her friends she left the apartment.
It is now my time to move on. Will this be my final journey into my unforgettable past?
