Office
Stephanie Gregarious paced outside the office of her lawyer, noting that this aggravated his pretty secretary, until she was quivering, a bag of nerves. I bet she knew the ‘alter ego.’ From what I’ve pieced together, the old persona wouldn't have been happy waiting and would probably be telling her so in no uncertain terms by now.
Looking again at the woman she took pity on her asked. "Any coffee around here?"
The secretary looked at the tall dark woman in panic.
"Yes...yes there is, I'm sorry I should have…" she trailed off nervously as Steph put her hand up to stop the flow of words.
"Hey don't worry about it, it's my fault I asked to see Mr. Sawyer on short notice. Tell me where the machine is and I'll fetch it myself, would you care for one yourself?"
The secretary looked at her in shock shaking her head, pointing to a corner of the room that was partially hidden by a tall palm plant. This other alter ego of mine certainly scared the pants off people. Finding the freshly brewed coffee steaming in its container focused her mind back to her need for the caffeine fix.
Half an hour later, Andrew Sawyer bid farewell to his client, who he managed to placate for having cut their session short, then he looked at the tall dark woman seated in the alcove. He knew all about her, what she owned, her jobs in the past and what she was now after the accident. He respected but not liked the old Stephanie Gregarious. For him she had a very cold calculated look on life, even when she talked about a possible marriage type agreement with Louise Masterson. Now this same woman in front of him was vulnerable but still in total control of her destiny. She asked him questions and let him choose her fate on numerous business deals lately. He knew she was the challenge that only came once in a lifetime to his legal end of the profession. You could either screw the client or be totally scrupulous he’d opted for the latter. Somewhere the true Stephanie Gregarious existed between the two personalities and if the original one decided to take control he did not want to be in the same Country if he’d mishandled her affairs. It was going to be interesting watching this particular scenario play to the end of the scene, it reminded him of a mystery movie and he loved a good mystery.
"Stephanie good to see you again, please take a seat in my office."
Steph looked at her lawyer and although she hadn't been sure at first she liked what she saw. He had shown he was more than capable and dealt with all her problems without turning a hair. "Okay, thanks for seeing me on such short notice Andrew."
"No problem, let’s go through whatever you need." His smile made him look handsome for a brief moment.
Entering the plush office she realized that he had to be either a very good lawyer or a very good crooked lawyer, she had decided on the former.
"Stephanie what can I do for you today?"
"Well, you know I have friends from New York that have just settled here?"
Andrew Sawyer nodded his head, he had arranged for the apartment to be paid for under their custody.
"I need you to find out who is the best doctor in the WORLD to help Simon my friend's son. I have the details of his injuries in this folder." She handed him a manila folder with the name Simon Phantos scribbled on the side.
"You know of course that could take some time and depending upon the Doctor's prognosis a substantial amount of funds?” As it could mean all of her wealth, Sawyer wanted to know exactly how far this woman would go on the expenses part.
"If it means everything I have to get the boy well, you can have it." She stated quietly, no apparent emotion at the loss of her fortune.
Andrew Sawyer swallowed and looked at her, she was clearly adamant about it.
"No, I have sources who can track down the people we need, I will need to have at least two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the initial expenses.
"Okay, you can have that no problem what do you want me to sign? When you need more call me, I'm flying to Ampolisa at noon you can contact me at this number."
"Is that all?" he queried he had the distinct impression there was more.
"Actually no it isn't. I want you to set up a document concerning a possible re-occurrence of my head injury. If I have surgery and there is any chance that I cannot remember what's going on, I want the apartment to be passed over to Elizabeth Eponin. No catches, just a straight forward change over and for the first five years all ancillary charges to be paid for out of the Gregarious Estate." Steph smiled at him as he looked at her with hooded eyes.
"It begs the question do you really want the money you have?" Andrew Sawyer asked her.
"Oh Andrew really I'm no fool, I want the money. If it can be put to better use for the moment let's give it a chance shall we?"
"I understand, is that all?" he asked waiting for another bombshell.
"Actually yes that's all." She smiled at him and held out her hand.
Andrew shook her hand and smiled back.
"Thanks for your understanding." She said as she left his office for the airport.
Andrew watched her confidently leave his office and shook his head.
He had work to do and fast there was no time to lose if he was going to find this doctor person she wanted. What a really strange turn up for the books she had become, somewhat refreshing though in this world of people who didn't care for anything but themselves, maybe there was hope for them all yet.
"Contact Al Lucas of Lucas investigations for me will you Sherry."
Walking back to his office he turned abruptly, grinning like a schoolboy at his secretary.
"Sherry, next time someone tells you they have lost their head, don't laugh ask them what it feels like with a new one. Because sure as hell that woman has lost hers but she's replaced it with a wonderful change." He closed the door before she could answer.

A Greeting
Jane West was waiting patiently at the terminal for her boss to arrive. It had been a surprise to hear from her, however, not totally unexpected. She requested that Jane acquire transportation for her and that had been easy. Jane stored Steph’s pride and joy her black Jaguar at the gallery garage ever since Steph had left the first time. She had it maintained every six months but never had done more than take it for the odd drive as the mechanic instructed. Now she had given it, its first real spin in over three months and perhaps now it would be of use again.
Looking for Steph as passengers disembarked she saw her tall, dark boss who from a distance appeared to be totally at ease. Although when she moved closer it was clear by the hesitation in her body and the nervous gestures emitted from her that this was a different Stephanie Gregarious.
"Hey, Steph over here."
Steph looked over, visibly relaxing when she had heard a familiar voice.
Within ten minutes they arrived at the car park. Several feet from the vehicle Jane clicked open the Jag and became aware that Steph had stopped and was staring at the vehicle.
"Steph you all right?"
Steph continued to look at the car shaking the image away as she turned to Jane. "Yeah I'm fine, must be a little tired from the flight."
"This is yours, I've kind of been taking care of the little monster until you wanted to use it again." Jane replied not convinced it was the flight that had stopped the taller woman in her tracks.
"It's a beautiful vehicle, kinda draws you to it." Steph spoke softly her tone one of awe.
"Yeah I guess it does, all yours I believe.” Jane smiled as she handed the keys over to Steph.
Not waiting for a second chance Steph took the keys and slid into the driver's seat. Jane watched in pleasure as Steph revved up the engine. Strange and wonderful…this feels like coming home to me.
"So, how does it feel to have your own wheels?" Jane asked with a grin as the airport was left behind them.
Steph looked at her as she maneuvered a bend. "Nothing feels better, this car just feels like it fits, don't ask me why but it does."
"Well in that case maybe you and the monster can get reacquainted and take it for a longer spin and see the sights."
"Maybe I should at that!" Steph responded as she swiftly changed gear as they sped off in the direction of the town.
Fifteen minutes later they arrived at Steph’s apartment and once they unloaded her meager luggage Jane then excused herself but said she would call later. Steph for the first time found herself left to her own devices. She walked round the strange apartment trying to identify the things that were personal to her or at least the person she used to be.
In the last month she had grown used to nothing being familiar although it didn't make anything any easier to accept. This was all a game to her now. I wonder if anything will ever trigger the memories I desperately want to make me whole again. What I don't want is to lose all the friends and memories I've made in the last year! Well, if I do have a relapse and loose my current memories, I have made some far reaching decisions, that will ensure my new friends will not suffer at the hand of this new Stephanie Gregarious…not like the friends from my former existence have.
Except for an elaborate alarm system similar to the one in Chicago, there was nothing to say this was anything other than a stranger's apartment. Indeed it felt just like that, a hotel room for visiting only. What I need now is a friendly face… Louise Masterson will certainly help me feel at home again. Her fingers were gently tugging the key on the gold chain around her neck, for some reason it gave a comfort that she couldn't understand, it just did!
Dialing Louise’s number she got through to the ranch only to find that Louise was working but would return her call when she returned. Steph patiently waited in the lonely, cold apartment reflecting on the things she knew so far, which wasn't much at all. The one thing I know for certain is that I want to get to know Louise and maybe she will fall in love with who I am now.
A couple of hours later the phone rang and Steph virtually fell over the sofa in her efforts to retrieve the phone. "Hello."
"Hi Steph, you arrived earlier than I thought you would." Louise managed to damp down the gushing eagerness in her tone.
"Yeah, I cleared up things quicker than I thought so…well I just thought maybe you wouldn't mind showing me around as we discussed…" I wonder if she's changed her mind and won't want to see me?
"Great, no problem. When do you want to start?" I hope I didn't sound too anxious and frighten her away.
What I want most of all is for you to be here now with me but that is impossible, isn't it?
"I guess if you're free tomorrow sometime, if you're not working that is...you tell me I'm at your disposal?"
Is that hesitation I hear? Is Steph Gregarious actually nervous? Oh, I want you at my disposal my love. "What are you doing for dinner tonight?"
"Nothing, I was going to take the Jag out for a drive, did you know I had a Jag? Oh of course you did what an idiot I am. I thought I’d find out where the nearest store was."
"Yes I know it's a beautiful car too. How would it be, if you drive over to the ranch and pick me up about seven this evening, we could go eat at one of the local restaurants? That will be the start of your re-introduction, what do you say?"
Steph, you have always loved that car. I hope you like my suggestion…please like my suggestion!
"Great idea, seven no problem, I can find my way over to you, thanks Louise." Damn, this is turning out to be a great day!
"See you at seven and Steph don't get lost will you?" she teased her friend.
"No way, absolutely not." Hell, I have a couple of hours to find it, now do I have a map of the area or not?

Dinner
The restaurant they chose brought unforgettable memories back for Louise although she couldn't exactly explain that to Steph.
As they drove past Steph exclaimed, “I love Chinese food want to give it a try?” How was she to know the significance of the place? The one that eventually brought about the downfall of their relationship the first time and set the present events on a collision course!
Neither of us set foot in this place since, but I am going to put that all behind us. This time we will make this a memorable meal for the right reasons!
"Steph you still enjoy Chinese food that's good it is one of my favourites too."
Steph smiled at the younger woman who was grinning broadly.
"Yeah, Liz couldn't stop me from buying at least one Chinese take-out a week, I would have gone for more but she insisted that we have some variety of meals."
Louise smiled as they were shown to their table, which turned out to be a secluded corner, very intimate and discreet. Wonder who rang ahead?
Steph raised expressive eyebrows at the position of the table, declining to comment. We do need to get to know each other after all.
"Liz ensured you ate a variety of meals? It appears that you and Liz had a good friendship going?" Louise asked quietly and watched her friend's reaction.
"Sure, Liz has a very warm heart and would take in any waif and stray I'm sure of it, I think I forgot to tell Emma that one." Bet she will be filling that apartment in Chicago with down and outs.
She has genuine affection for Liz I can see it in her eyes and hear it in the warmth of her voice. Was that what I wanted to see? "I guess you would think that, particularly as she took you in, and you being a virtual stranger to her."
I want you to understand Louise how I feel about her it is important. "Liz said something strange the time she agreed to take me in. That somehow she had to do it, something called to her and she would see it to the end. I guess for Liz that means death us do part, she is a very special person in my life now, my best friend in fact."
God, that comment hurt like hell! Hadn't I been your best friend?
"Then I'm very pleased you managed to find such a special woman in such a very hostile environment." Louise responded quietly.
Steph grinned back as they ordered their meal without detecting the hurt she had inflicted on the woman opposite her.
They leisurely ate the meal, as Steph asked Louise questions about the town and the characters living there. This is de-j-vu isn't it Steph? I remember having this exact conversation with you at one of our first meetings.
Louise noticed out of the corner of her eye someone at the nearby table had begun to stare at them, which was quite difficult with its discreet position. Wondered if it was anyone she knew she looked directly across at the interested party to see who it was. The people at the table were the mayor, Lance Arenas, and his family, wife Alice, and their children Jon, Alex and Stella. I don't like the way Jon is staring at me it is making me uncomfortable. I haven't seen him in two years but I can see he hasn't changed from the creep in my classroom. He is still the same cocky kid with money and no personality.
The other children had seen her turn to look at them and had smiled briefly at her then carried on with the conversation. I may be way off base here but I think I know a lustful look when I see it! He really is making me very uncomfortable. What's up with this kid?
Steph cleared her voice twice eventually placing her hand on Louise’s as she tried to get her attention. Something or someone certainly has her attention. Not a good start to getting to know each other is she bored with me already. Wonder who that is? I don't like the way he is looking at her and it is clearly making Louise very uncomfortable. Who the hell does he think he is?
"Louise you with me or off somewhere much more exciting?"
Louise immediately looked at her friend startled at the large comforting hand holding hers on the table. "I'm sorry Steph I was briefly thinking about something else, I'm really sorry." Oh Steph, it feels so good to have your hand on mine.
"Hey that's okay Louise, it happens. Do you want to have a coffee or go home?"
Louise smiled at her and glanced down to see that Steph hadn't taken away her hand. "If you don't mind I think home might be good, I need to prepare something for the morning session. Then I have the afternoon free if you want to go exploring?" I've never forgotten how your touch made me feel.
"Sounds like a plan to me. Do you want to bring Emily along and Argo, maybe we could go on a family picnic?" Why not give it a try the worse thing she can say is no. That thought makes me sad.
Louise produced a magnificent smile, one that lit the darkness outside the building. "I would love to have a family picnic with you, Emily and Argo. I need to remind you that they can be quite a handful, are you ready for that responsibility?" You don't know how happy you have just made me Steph!
"Hey when you smile like that at me, you can ask me to go through hell for you and it would be no problem. I'm ready for the responsibility." You don't know how happy you have just made me Louise!
Louise blushed, she couldn't help herself, Jon Arenas and his unwanted observation now pushed into the background. The only person I ever want interested in me is right here beside me, and I will do my damnedest to keep it that way this time around!

Picnic
Henry Masterson watched as his daughter Louise along with his granddaughter Emily and her dog Argo got into the waiting car belonging to Stephanie Gregarious. He dreaded the day this would happen but this time was different, Louise would be back! Things changed drastically since she first mentioned Steph coming back this time around for he grudgingly conceded that he liked the woman, strange as it was. In the past I made an effort to know this woman so I could find out what her intentions were. For all intent and purpose she seemed sincere and I went along with her for the sake of Louise. Now I am prepared to help, with whatever it will take. I am going to help not just for Louise but also for Stephanie, the woman who has captured my daughter's heart. He gave them all a wave and returned to his study to attend to business.
“Where to?”
"I think Andrews Peak, would be a great place, as it's school time no one will be around. It has excellent views of the mountains and the river. Argo and Emily will be fine, and it has a wonderful grassy slope, ideal really."
Steph touched a finger to her cheek tracing a gentle line down the side of her right cheek. "Then Andrews Peak it is my lady." I didn't plan on touching her, it just happened. I am so pleased Louise didn't flinch or moved away from my touch. I wonder if it had been an impulse or did I want to see what sort of reaction I would get? Well, one thing is for certain, Louise didn't flinch and she certainly looked like she was relaxed about the situation.
Emily was settled into a car seat with Argo looking out of the window at her side. Louise was enjoying the view of not only the countryside, but also the discreet glances she gave Steph, who apparently was unaware of her shy glances. I wonder what made you want to touch me in that way Steph? It felt as if you remembered something about us. Did you I wonder?
They arrived at the local beauty spot and settled down to the antics of Emily and Argo, which certainly tired everyone out. Setting out the picnic to finally enjoy the fare Mrs. Collins selected for them.
Within minutes of consuming the food, Louise settled Emily down on the blanket to sleep alongside Argo, who appeared to take great pride in protecting his small friend.
"They get on well together." Steph said quietly as she watched Louise cover her daughter with a light blanket. Louise stroked the dog gently and turned to her companion.
"Yes they do thankfully. Argo has not always been that friendly to people, but when he does like them it's for life I think, with him. He protects Emily, always has ever since she was born."
Steph moved closer to her friend, smiling as Louise shifted slightly to give her space so she could sit beside her, the sleeping child and dog.
"I need to ask you a question Louise I hope I don't offend you."
"I doubt you could offend me, what do you need to know?"
"I wondered who the father of Emily was? Also why he isn't around now?" Steph looked down at the blades of grass, taking a sharp intake of air as she asked the question. I hope I haven't overstepped the bounds here.
At some stage I knew this question was going to come up, and why not get it over with now.
"I was raped, they never found the assailants. If you want the honest answer I don't know." Louise spoke quietly the words barely held any emotion, just fact.
Steph quickly regarded Louise and gave her a look of compassion and understanding, unable to stop from asking the next question.
"When you talked of your lost love it was someone else? What happened did the child's conception bother them?"
Louise looked directly into the ice blue eyes that held quizzical warmth and friendship. The love I long to see once again in your eyes is gone. Is all the love we shared really lost to you?
"She couldn't take the news at first, my fault it was a misunderstanding. When she did come around to the idea, something happened and she can't quite make it home to us at the moment." Knowing her ambiguous statement told Steph more than what she had asked.
Steph never wavered her eyes from Louise. I know of course it is my alter ego she talking about here. Albeit Louise does not know I know that. I feel as though I am betraying Louise in a very profound way.
"Are you ready to move on?" she picked up Louise’s hand that lay close to hers, caressing it tenderly.
Louise didn't know what to say. It is so, so easy to relax into this woman beside me. And, take what she appears to offer, which was what exactly? Yet I want MY Steph back, the woman who most people found difficult but I found loving and protective. Yes she was confident and aggressive, all for the right reasons though. Would this Steph ever be able to match up to the one I loved? Only time would tell, but do we have the time?
"I'm not ready to give up on her yet, NO!" Louise cried out with the pain she felt at her loss. How ridiculous am I to think this way? Steph is right here beside me, what more do I want?
Steph looked away from the pain filled eyes, standing up abruptly walked to the overhang, which looked down to the river below. She stood there in a reflective mood, a part of her felt that she had been cut loose without a safety harness in a harsh lonely world. There isn't anything left for me, not even here, if I don't remember who I am, who I really am. It brought a sense of despair into the pit of her stomach, as she never experienced since the accident.
Louise looked at the tense figure and her heart broke all over again. Physically the woman I want is right there in front of me but it is just a shell though. The woman standing a few yards from me doesn't have that special love in her heart we shared and I can't live without that.
The air around them was still and quiet except for the odd snort from Argo and the birds that flew around. The silence between the two women grew until Louise decided she had, had enough! That surely reminds me of the old Steph guess some things never change.
"I thought maybe once Emily woke up, we could go into town and I could show you around? We have Emily's carriage, and Argo is good in town, what do you say?"
Steph fingered the key around her neck. I want to ask about the key, but this just isn't the right time, may never be the right time now. Was Paul wrong about this love Louise has for me? Then again just because I look like the woman Louise fell in love with, it doesn't stand to reason she would immediately embark on an affair with me. Obviously the soul of Stephanie Gregarious called to Louise, not the physical attraction. Has my soul changed? My god this is like trying to work out the meaning of life in the space of a few minutes! I don't think I am ready for that now. Giving a self-depreciating shrug she answered her friend.
"Sure I would like that, come over here and look at the scenery it's very powerful."
Louise smiled and walked over to her friend, standing next to her within a few inches, Steph held her hand out offering it to Louise.
Was it a gesture of friendship? Love? Compassion? What did it matter, it comes from the one person I want it to, even though I can't quite come to terms with the changes in her. We will ride this particular problem out together won't we?
Louise grasped the offered hand as if it was a life belt. They chatted together amiably until Emily woke up, then packed all their belongings leaving in search of the town.

The Town Of Ampolisa
Steph parked the car at the center of town, and they headed off in the direction of the numerous shops that teemed both sides of the main road. Although not particularly large it adequately provided a variety of retailers. Steph’s gallery was on the outskirts of the main road, so she never had a proper look at the town or the amenities offered.
Walking by the local gym Steph peered at the window with interest, Louise noticed the look unable to suppress her smile. "Yes you're a member, in fact that's the place where we first met." As she filled in some of the gaps on their first meeting, much to her friend's surprise and pleasure.
Chuckling Steph remarked. "Well, I have a lot to thank that particular place for then haven't I?" she couldn't keep the smirk, which hadn't been missed by Louise, off her face.
"Maybe we can have a sparring match sometime soon?" Louise felt good all of a sudden.
"Sure, anytime you know that." Steph answered, moving around Louise to take her turn at pushing Emily's carriage.
Louise was surprised at the move but pleased all the same, as she was given Argo’s lead.
They chatted as they walked along the street, Louise pointing to several places of interest and also introduced Steph to several of the locals. Many heard that the local gallery owner had been in an accident and lost her memory and had been courteous but very curious. Some of them also knew that Louise and Steph had lived together for sometime before the baby was born. Although there had been plenty of speculation nothing had ever been said directly to them. Then again you did not take on the wealthy Henry Masterson or his family unless you really knew the facts and wanted a bloody war on your hands.
Then they came face to face with four young men. Steph immediately recognized the tallest one from the restaurant the night before. Louise had paled significantly not looking too happy with this turn of events.
Steph concentrated her ice blue cold, very cold, eyes directly at the leering stare of the boy in front of her. "Something we can do for you?"
Jon Arenas looked at her disparagingly and then back at Louise. "Nope, just enjoying the view, if you know what I mean?"
Louise gently put her hand on Steph’s as she noticed her bristle, the hackles rising within the tall woman at her side.
Steph looked at her and smiled briefly. "Good. Well, you can get out of the way then can't you, we would like to pass."
The other young men with Jon Arenas looked at the intimidating form of the athletic woman who looked somewhat sinister with the scar across her forehead. Maybe this wasn't a good idea, they had, had their fun with the other woman two years ago maybe they should back off. They looked to their leader.
"Well, maybe if Miss. Masterson wants to get by she's going to have to ask nicely." He looked with piercing cold eyes at Steph.
Steph looked to Louise for direction. She knew what she wanted to do but she was a stranger in town and didn't want to embarrass Louise, especially as the kid seemed to know her.
"It's okay Steph, I'll handle this."
"Jon we need to pass, perhaps if you will be so good as to move for us to do that?" She knew that it looked like she had given in to intimidation but her daughter was a priority here, everything else paled into insignificance.
He looked at the beautiful woman and couldn't keep his mind on anything other than he had to try her out again, no matter what it cost him.
"Sure, but on one condition you come out on a date with me tonight!" It wasn't a question merely an arrogant statement.
Louise cringed at the thought, and in her peripheral vision saw Steph move towards the front of the carriage, her stance said anything but calm in it.
"You bastard! Get your ass and your cronies out of the way before I report you to the cops. Unless you want me to show you how a New Yorker treats scum like you, because sure as hell I would love too, just give me a reason!" Steph’s anger had finally broken free.
"Guess the answers no then. All the rumours were right you are a couple of dykes!" he spit out at Steph.
"Well, if you are the extent of the talent in this town, thank Christ for that!" This little upstart is just an arrogant windbag.
Jon Arenas coloured up slightly at the comment, some of his friends snickering behind his back, turning he gave them a glowering look.
"Your time will come dyke." He shouted with malice.
"I'll look forward to it." Steph replied refusing to be phased by the title he had chosen to give her. Motioning Louise to give her Argo as she put him forward, he snarled and barked at the four young men, having already tried to get closer but Louise had held him back.
They moved out of the way of the snarling dog, muttering the dog should be shown a lesson, then back into the small arcade.
Steph moved behind Louise with Argo to protect her and Emily's back.
"Let's go to the coffee shop over there, we can sit outside with Argo, okay?" Steph tentatively asked the obviously shaken woman.
Louise turned slightly and gave her a wan smile "Yeah, I think I need it."
It wasn't just Louise who was having trouble, Steph had a sudden blinding headache again. Damn the pills are in the apartment, I'm not going to last very long without them, maybe the coffee will help.
They settled Argo, seating themselves at a corner table outside as Steph hailed the waiter, having ordered the coffees she looked into green troubled eyes.
"Hey Louise, I'm sorry if that upset you? I never meant to get heavy but..."
Louise looking up into equally troubled ice blue eyes noticed a flinch of pain too. "It's okay they were jerks, always have been, their parents have money, and money in a small town talks."
Their coffee arrived and Steph paid for the drinks immediately. This pain isn't easing any. With having to run Louise home first it was going to be a real humdinger if we stay here too long.
She certainly was in a hurry to pay, it's been a long day and those idiot kids didn't help any. I hope she is okay. Was that pain I saw?
"Are you upset at what they said about us Louise?" Steph had to know.
Louise looked deep into her coffee cup hoping that it would give her an answer.
"If I'm honest, yes. I hadn't realized that was how people judged me!"
Steph looked at the distress on the woman's face and without thinking put her hand over hers.
"It's a small town Louise, people don't like it when other's don't conform to their view on how life should be! Then again it was only punks who said it, the other people we met today were friendly enough." She tentatively tried to bring the young woman out of her melancholy mood.
Looking directly at Steph "Is it what they really think though and are too cowardly to say it to my face?" the pain in the statement evident.
"I can't answer that, only you can, you know these people better than I do. You have to understand that they may think like that scum, then you have to decide to either give up that part of your life and conform, or you say to hell with it and find solace in your choices whatever they happen to be." Steph wanted to add more but her head was killing her and she found it difficult not to find a dark place, curl up and shut her eyes.
"Yeah, maybe you're right." She noticed another flinch from Steph.
"You okay?" she asked tentatively giving the hand that held hers a gentle squeeze.
Steph smiled weakly herself this time, "I have a headache and forgot my pills, do you think I can take you back and we can arrange something for tomorrow?"
Louise forgot her own sad thoughts as she turned concerned green eyes on her friend. "Sure, let's go, it's time for Emily to wake up her grandfather anyway."
Once at the ranch Steph dropped Louise, Emily and Argo off declining to stay any longer but said she would call Louise a little later when the headache subsided.
Arriving at the apartment at break neck speed, she immediately swallowed three pills. These days just taking two pills isn't enough. How recently has this become a habit? It is every day now I better talk to Emma, but not now. Walking into her bedroom she darkened it and fell onto the bed, far too exhausted to even remove her clothes. She didn't even have the energy to go over her afternoon with Louise in her mind.
A drugged sleep easily took her to the realms of her own kaleidoscope of dreams.

Differences
It was ten p.m. and Louise was pacing the floor of the open lounge. Steph hadn't called and she had promised!
Now Louise calm down, she hasn't left town, she just has a headache and needs to rest, well hopefully that was all there was to it!
Kay looked over at the tense stance of her older sister and wondered not for the first time, how on earth did Stephanie Gregarious manage to freak her out so much? Her father and Dave were discussing a problem that occurred that day on the ranch, both Louise’s daughter Emily and Kay's son, three month old Daniel were asleep in Emily's room.
"Louise why don't you just call her, you're making me dizzy with your pacing?" Kay finally gave in pleading with her sister to do something constructive.
Louise looked at her sister and smiled sheepishly.
"Hey I'm sorry Kay, but she promised to call when the headache had gone, that was hours ago. I guess I'm just worried that's all. What if she still has some trauma from the head injury? I…I would feel kind of foolish calling if she's okay and I've over reacted."
Kay smiled at her sister. "I think I would feel flattered at the attention from a beautiful woman if I were Steph."
Louise blushed. "Oh come on Kay, it's not like that between us…!" Of course if I had given Steph the opening today she would have taken it and then that comment would have been inappropriate.
"Do you want it to be? I mean with the new Steph." Kay asked tentatively.
"The love I have for Steph hasn't diminished Kay, the woman she is now and the woman she was are so very different in many ways. I don't see the love she had for me in her eyes like they used to. She doesn't love me how I know I was meant to be loved and have been loved, does that make any sense to you?"
Kay got up and placed an arm around her sister hugging her in compassion. "Yeah I think I understand."
They heard the men return and both grinned at each other, as Louise walked over to the drink cabinet needing a strong one herself.

Steph woke up to her darkened room, wincing as the pain from the headache, although not as harsh, certainly still hung in there, usually it cleared when she got up and had a coffee.
Gradually making her way to the kitchen she glanced at the clock on the wall and she gasped when it showed three a.m. Hell I was supposed to call Louise! Going to have to phone her early in the morning that's for sure. Guess she wouldn't have been too worried though, she did know I had a headache.
Making coffee at three a.m. had become something of a routine these days, when she had a headache she usually ended up sleeping the late afternoon and into the early morning. Yesterday was no exception, but she had enjoyed her day, now she came to ponder the memories that sprang into her mind.
Guess I have to convince Louise that she has to give up the old me, and allow the new me a chance. Don't know if that's possible but I'm going to try! Wonder if Liz will give me any advice? I sure could do with some about now! I need to call her later anyway.
Sipping her coffee she remembered Louise’s smile, her tender care of her child and the antics with Argo.
"I want to have you look at me with that deep love and affection Louise." she whispered to the empty room.
Walking out of the kitchen she went to a cabinet where she had placed a small security box, which would trigger the alarm if it was removed from it's position or the correct key code wasn't entered. She punched in the number sequence and watched the light change from red to green, opening the box she moved the papers, money and credit cards then removed the object she wanted, the small box containing the engagement ring.
Sitting on the sofa Steph opened the box smiling as she always did when she looked at the ring for it was so beautiful and full of promise, as of yet unfulfilled dreams.
Several days before she embarked on her overseas trip after breaking up with Louise Steph changed her will making Louise the main beneficiary with Paul and his family. She had never given up on her love for Louise hoping it was just lost for a short time. Since her accident and her lack of knowledge about her previous background, she had left most things intact except that she had now included Liz and Emma. Even if she did get her memory back things wouldn't change too drastically, she was after all a very wealthy woman, for the moment anyway, depending on how much it cost to find an answer for Simon.
Whatever happened with that scenario, she knew that Andrew Sawyer would have certain assets available for her if the worse came to the worse. It had been refreshing to find that her lawyer was not only a professional but, for whatever reason, had a desire to help her regardless of the consequences.
She knew that he would find a way to get the best possible help without using the bulk of her amassed wealth. Funny I really never asked where all that money came from. Guess I wasn't that interested, maybe I should be it wouldn't hurt to find out.
Steph flexed her shoulder muscles finding the tension of the headache dissipating. Maybe I will forget telling Emma about the headaches for the moment the pills seem to work eventually.
Well, it is going to be a few hours before I can call anyone. I'm hungry… yeah that's a good idea food. Looking in the refrigerator she noticed she hadn't really stocked up on any food. Wonder if Ampolisa has an all night café? Think I’ll take a shower and then a drive at four a.m. to find someplace to eat is just what I need to clear my head.

Communications
Louise woke up early, earlier than expected anyway. She hadn't slept that well either, although with the drinks she had she should have slept like a log. Her father even commented on the number she consumed.
Groaning as she looked at the clock on the bedside table, it was six a.m. This isn't good. Emily won't be up for at least another hour! This is going to be a long day a very long day! I hope your okay Steph.
Her mind was immediately on her friend and her current welfare.
Who do I think I ‘m kidding? Steph has been on my mind ever since she left yesterday. She's the reason I drank more than normal and why I had a restless night. Just you wait until you call Steph! There was no hesitation this time, she knew that Steph would call it was just as simple as that.
Getting out of bed she padded over to the window and looked out over the yard of the ranch, the early morning mist clearly visible, giving a sense of mystery to the scene. As a child she had always loved to use her imagination to create scenes that existed only in her own fantasy land. Am I seeing things? No, it is impossible! There is definitely only one car that looked like that around here. Hell Steph what are you doing here at this time?
She quickly grabbed her jeans, a shirt and dragged them on as she left her room hastily, running down the stairs as fast as she could without falling down them. Unlocking the front door she ran down the steps. This isn't a mirage it really is Steph’s Jaguar parked out there at this time of the morning.
Slowing her pace a little she approached the vehicle and saw the door open on the driver's side. A smiling Stephanie Gregarious swiftly pulled her tall frame from the car.
Looking at the fast moving figure running towards her she was eminently pleased at Louise' reaction to her being there at this time. Does she have a second sense when it comes to me? I've only been here about five minutes. How did she know I was thinking it would be better to go see her rather than call? I sure thought I would be waiting at least another hour or more, this certainly is a bonus.
Louise stopped just in front of the bumper of the car staring at her friend.
Ice blue locked quickly onto green, a smile crinkled the skin around Steph’s eyes as she moved closer to Louise.
"Hey I'm sor..." Steph started as Louise said, "I was worr...."
Both women laughed self consciously simultaneously, and then Steph cleared her throat and tried again. "I have pills that knock me out Louise, I didn't wake until three this morning, I'm sorry I couldn't call."
Louise looked at the bowed head of her friend as a weary smile played around her lips. "I guess I worry too much."
Steph laughed gently. "Oh please never say that, I'm kinda glad you care enough to worry!"
Louise blushed a little, capturing once again the ice blue eyes that she never wanted to be released from. "You're early."
"Yeah, I've been to Fred's diner and had breakfast, well it was dinner too this headache business makes me hungry."
"I guess it could do at that, next time I'm going to insist you stay the night and in future make sure you take your pills with you when you go out!" Louise was helpless to stop commenting in such a personal way, it bordered on possessiveness.
Hell it hadn't bordered it was blatant.
"Maybe I will take you up on that one."
"Anytime."
"How about you come in for coffee then we can talk for a while?"
"Absolutely, no problem with that at all, lead the way fair lady."
Louise turned and walked back towards the ranch house with Steph walking closely beside her.
They discussed general topics including Emily, Louise’s painting, Liz and Emma and to some degree Simon and his illness. They didn't, although, talk about anything personal concerning themselves.
When Mrs. Collins walked in around six forty-five, the coffee was flowing along with smiles from both women. "Well, this is a rare occasion Louise but very welcome." The housekeeper smiled at them both.
"Steph arrived earlier than expected and I thought you wouldn't mind." Louise was embarrassed at having commandeered Mrs. Collins domain.
Mrs. Collins, who had known Louise for most of her life, couldn't help but smile at her embarrassment. It was as if she had been found out on a secret rendezvous with a date. Maybe she had!
"Pleased to see you again Ms. Gregarious, did you have a good day with Louise’s family yesterday?"
"Thanks, yes I had a good time, Louise has a very beautiful daughter and Argo is great company."
Mrs. Collins nodded her head and began to prepare for the breakfast it was definitely going to be a full house this morning with the Macklin’s staying overnight.
"Louise will your guest be staying for breakfast?" she asked over her shoulder having turned her back to the two of them at the kitchen table.
Louise looked at Steph for her answer.
"Thanks for the offer Mrs. Collins, but I've eaten already and I need to go and see Jane at the gallery before she gets started on anything."
Both Louise and Mrs. Collins looked slightly dismayed that she wasn't going to stay. Steph saw the disappointment on their faces.
"If lunch is an offer later I wouldn't mind inviting myself?" she tried a different approach.
Both women visibly cheered up and approved the notion.
"Yes of course Steph, come for lunch then we can do some more sightseeing."
"Good, that's settled then, how about you two ladies go and see if Emily is awake and I can have my kitchen free to do some work." Mrs. Collins clucked her acceptance of the lunch.
Louise grinned at Steph and held out her hand as casually Steph took hold of it and walked along side her.
Louise blushed, and turned her head to see if Mrs. Collins had noticed the gesture. Mrs. Collins was smiling her approval at the obviously flustered Louise. Guess that's one person in this household that wouldn't mind if Steph comes back into my life.
"I guess I'd better go and see if Emily is awake, do you need to go or can you stay longer?" I wish you could stay with me forever.
Steph looked down at their clasped hands. Oh how I wish I could stay.
"I'm sorry Louise but I’d better head out. I do have to see Jane and then I have some calls to make to Liz and my lawyer."
Louise looked up into Steph’s eyes and saw the regret clearly etched there.
“That's okay. Kay and Dave will be sorry to have missed you, they haven't seen you since… you came back."
"How about you invite them for lunch and I can get to meet the rest of the family?"
"Yeah I can do that, Kay will be staying over another night anyway. Dad wants to spend some time with Daniel, not sure if Dave can stay though but I’ll ask."
"Great, so what time do you want me to be back here?"
"Well, Mrs. Collins usually likes to serve lunch around one, so around that time would be okay." Louise squeezed the hand she still held.
"I'll be back before then, count on it." She squeezed the hand back and then gently dropped it heading for the door.
"Bye for now Louise, I enjoyed the coffee." I feel so comfortable with her I can feel the love and caring she possesses.
"Thanks for caring Louise." She was out of the door before Louise had time to answer.
Looking at the closed door she said quietly to an empty room "You're welcome Steph."

Steph’s meeting with Jane West was primarily to see how things were going and if Jane wanted any help… what help she could have rendered defeated her at this moment. Jane had been gracious to say the least, however it clearly shown in her schooled features that she didn't think Steph was capable of contributing.
They did have a really interesting observations about art and what the old Steph liked and what the new Steph preferred. One thing for certain was she loved the landscape painting by Paul Ironside… that had obviously not changed. The gallery, although in a small town, was very popular and the profits had continued to rise under Jane's stewardship. Steph didn't need to lift a finger and she had money flowing in.
Leaving the gallery around ten she went back to her apartment, settling on the sofa with the phone. Liz said she would be free this morning giving her an opportunity for a decent conversation with her friend.
Dialing the number she waited for Liz to answer.
"Hello, Liz Eponin speaking."
"Hi Liz, how is good old Chicago?" Steph asked her friend her features easing as she felt a rush of happiness her friend's voice sparked.
"Steph! Great to hear from you, what are you doing with yourself now that you're there?"
"Well, I'm having a few sightseeing tours with Louise, I've been to the gallery this morning, what about you?"
"Well, you will never believe it but Emma on her first day got a call from a mystery lawyer who was working for someone who wanted to pay for Simon’s treatment. When she got home she was in shock, the lawyer said money was no object and he would be back in touch." Liz excitedly told Steph.
"Hey that's great, I hope she's going to take the offer."
"Yeah well, we both know how stubborn she is but I convinced her, why look a gift horse in the mouth."
"Oh I assume you used your feminine wiles on her and she agreed"
"Yeah of course I did to enhance the point, it was really enjoyable too."
"So, how are you settling into Chicago?" Steph asked unable to disguise her agitation as the conversation shifted at speed to another topic.
What's bothering you my friend?
"Well, not as well as I would if you were here." She said more to gauge the reaction.
"Hey, have you been reading my mind?" Steph laughed self consciously.
"No, but I think after all we have been through together in the last year it was something we would both miss, no matter who we had to replace the void with. So what gives at your end?" Liz asked diplomatically.
"Yeah, guess you're right as always my friend. I need some advice Liz have you the time to chat?" How I want to see you Liz. I want and need the security you always make me feel.
"Hey lover for you anytime, anyplace and anywhere, you just call okay?" I know you prefer to talk fact to face but it isn't possible right now. Is it? "If you need me to come too Ampolisa Steph, I will get the next flight out, you know that!"
"Hey it's not that bad, well, not yet anyway. I just need to talk to you my friend it's about Louise." Damn why was I so emotional. Now I have upset and worried Liz.
"I'm here Steph for as long as it takes, what's your problem?"
"I think I'm in love Liz and I don't know what to do about exorcising a ghost from the past, got any ideas?" Steph blurted out.
"Ghosts? Hell Steph that's a toughie, do you want to tell me the story?" Liz relaxed into her chair knowing this could really be a long call.
"I guess I better tell you that I'm the ghost…" Steph carried on with her story even though she heard the surprised gasp from Liz.

Lunch
Mrs. Collins looked at the time it was twelve forty- five and Ms. Gregarious hadn't arrived as yet. She hated the lunch to be late but as it was a cold spread she could handle being a little overdue, but it would put out her routine and she loved her routine.
The door to the kitchen opened and Louise Masterson stepped inside, evidently upset at the lateness of her friend.
"I'm really sorry Mrs. Collins but Steph obviously got held up somewhere, would you please wait lunch for a little while longer."
Mrs. Collins smiled at the gentle woman. She really didn't even need to ask.
"Louise it's okay, there's nothing to worry about, and I would worry more what your father says than what I say."
"Yeah Dad likes things on time, guess you and he make a good pair for that." Although Louise said it in jest a distinctive pink colour tinged the housekeeper’s cheeks. Not wanting to embarrass the woman further she turned and left the room. Interesting reaction!
Henry Masterson was pacing, like father, like daughter they say. Louise walked back into the lounge and saw his trail then glanced back to her sister and husband playing with Emily and Daniel. They looked at her as she approached smiling and shaking her head. Guess I'm going to have to call her and find out what's happened.
"Dad I'm going into the study to call Steph, hopefully she's well on her way here but if not, I’ll find out what the problem is."
Henry Masterson grunted as she passed him to his study. As she opened the door, Henry put his hand on her arm and stopped her from entering.
"If she has the black beast back in her life then she's here, go bring your woman in here Louise! Anyone for a drink I'm pouring?"
Louise was taken aback by her father’s comment and his laid back attitude, so she took him up on his offer quickly going outside.
While Steph talked to Liz for well over two hours trying to sort out her problems nothing was resolved. She did discover that both Liz and Emma knew about her involvement with Louise and that it was Emma’s decision not to tell her. They finally agreed she needed to take things slowly and that's exactly what she intended to do.
She also needed to talk to her lawyer and firm up plans to help Simon. Apparently the private investigators had quickly found the most experienced Doctor and would let them know in a weeks time if he was interested in taking the case. Steph had reiterated her original statement there would be no limit to the funds available, which could be spent in the quest for a cure. Andrew had stated the obvious to her and she had ignored it. What if there wasn't a cure?
With the calls completed Steph noticed the time was close to twelve thirty and she knew that she was going to push it to get to Louise’s home before one. Anyway here she was only slightly tardy! And there was the lady that made everything worth the effort and the speed limits she’d broken in her quest to get here as fast as possible.
Steph smiled lazily as she saw for the second time that day Louise dash towards her, although this time Louise didn't stop in time and cannoned right in to her arms as she got out of her car.
It feels so good to hold her in my arms.
"Guess you're in a hurry Ms. Masterson."
Louise blushed as she felt the quiet strength of Steph hold her in place. God I've missed this so much.
"Yeah, where have you been? Mrs. Collins is holding lunch and the others are getting hungry." She replied in confusion, as the arms felt so wonderful around her.
Steph laughed in her ear, the gentle breath next to her skin making Louise blush even more.
"I had some business to attend to, now for as long as you want to keep me here, I'm all yours,"
Louise knew she shouldn't have but she couldn't help herself, she looked up directly into the ice blue eyes and saw something familiar reflected there as she answered.
"I want to keep you here forever." She whispered into Steph’s neck.
The next thing she knew she was drowning in sensation as Steph closed the short gap, placing lips gently upon hers. She hadn't expected the explosion of senses that came with that gentle tentative touch for it had been so long. Then it became a remembered and totally natural reaction to allow her senses to take over.
They were interrupted by a sharp cough from the door of the ranch house.
"Hate to break this up ladies but… I'm not going to explain to your father why the lunch is even later than we originally planned." Dave Macklin said in amused tolerance.
Louise blushed at the interruption, as Steph released her and walked towards the man who she surmised to be Dave Macklin. "Thanks for reminding us, would you be Dave by any chance?"
He held out his hand to the woman that he knew but didn't, if that made any logical sense to anyone.
"Yeah you got that right, Dave Macklin at your service. Although I think you don't need my services you appear to have succeeded on your own."
Steph noting that this man was tall, real tall as she only came to his shoulder. "Thanks if I ever need it I will remember the offer."
Steph turned to find Louise making her way slowly towards them. Chuckling to herself she said. "Come on Louise, if you don't move it we are going to be late for lunch, whatever will your father say?"
Louise glanced at Steph and smiled broadly, shrugging her shoulders. Let them wait it is certainly worth any aggravation from my father, is it ever!
"Yeah I'm coming, you walk too fast."
Walking into the house again Steph felt that it was a warm place with lots of good vibes, nothing dark here. I had the distinct feeling that I would not be welcome here, yet that is weird because I was welcomed here on my first visit. It must be some kind of past life experience or something. What a strange feeling!
Louise caught up with them her emotions under control although she didn't know how she managed it really. Something primal had happened to her out in the yard, it was an emotion so intense it blinded her to everything, except Steph.
Henry Masterson was holding his grandson and gently rocking him to sleep, looking up he smiled at his daughter and raised his eyebrows at Dave who just shrugged his large shoulders. Turning his attention to their late guest he looked her over and nodded in her direction. "So, you turned up at last, didn't anyone teach you manners in New York?"
Louise bristled with indignation for her friend but Steph countered it easily. "Actually I hope so, but time will tell I guess. Sorry I'm a little late I had to take a long distance business call from my lawyer."
Looking round the room Steph saw a petite woman who had some familiar features to Louise, except she had chestnut hair. The woman wasn't to her anyway half as beautiful as Louise but then no one was.
Louise coming up to Steph grabbed her hand and took her over to meet her sister. Kay looked at Steph and smiled warmly. "Pleased to meet you…hate to say again, in another life might be more appropriate do you think?"
"You may well be right Kay, pleased to meet you again." Both women laughed and Kay moved to embrace her in spontaneous affection.
Mrs. Collins came into the room just at that moment announcing the meal smiling in happiness herself.
"Lunch is served if anyone wants anything?" She spoke in a mock aggressive tone.
Everyone gradually seated themselves around the large table as babies were situated between two loving adults. Henry Masterson smiled at his family as he turned towards Mrs. Collins and looked at her raising his eyebrows in mock anger at the lateness of the lunchtime.
"Guess these youngsters don't know when to arrive at a decent time for lunch Grace!" he smiled and laid a hand on her shoulder gently as he went past.
Louise turned at just the right time to see the gesture from her father. Interesting I wonder… Smiling she seated herself opposite Steph and next to her daughter who wanted immediate attention. Oh the joys of motherhood.
Much to Mrs. Collins delight the meal was finally served.
* * *
Shortly after lunch Henry and Dave prepared to leave so they could attend to some ranch business. Before he Henry left spoke to Steph as they made their way towards the lounge for a coffee. "You still want to stick around here when you have folks in Chicago begging you to stay?"
"Funny I thought the same thing a few days ago, but yeah something keeps me glued here and I'm not moving until a certain party tells me too."
Henry looking towards Louise had a genuine smile on his face as he turned his gaze back to Steph. "Then I guess you're here to stay. Mark my words Gregarious, you hurt her this time and you and I will have old unfinished business you hear me?" The words issued not in malice or anger, but as a concerned parent.
"I hear you. However, hurting Louise is the furthest thing from my mind. Can you stomach what I really want?" Steph asked in interest.
Henry looked her over and contemplated the stance that this woman had taken when she talked about his daughter. "If she's happy I'm happy, if you make her so then you will have no complaints from me!"
Steph looked at him in surprise finding that an unexpected reaction. "Then hopefully both of us will see Louise happy, because that's all I want out of this. Believe me, that's all I have ever wanted to see, Louise happy."
Henry looked her over one last time and said. "This is your last time Gregarious you make just one mistake you won't get another chance, make it the right choice this time around. If you don't, there won't be one person who knows you that will forgive again!"
He left a pensive looking Steph in his wake.
Turning back towards the others, Steph sucked in a sharp breath, as she walked towards them none too confident inwardly. Outwardly she wouldn't let anyone see what had transpired between Henry and her. The conversation rattled her a little for she had to admit for it was so much more than a general friendly conversation. I still have time to win him over I hope. This is Louise’s and my future at stake here and that is the most important factor, not her father.
Love will sustain us my love!
A Meeting of Hearts
The afternoon progressed at a gentle pace, the three of them talking and laughing together as old friends. From time to time Kay saw the discreet looks her sister gave Steph, if something isn't going on I'm a monkey's uncle. Steph appeared to be unaware of the glances she received from her friend, although she had been aware of the open glances from her friend's sister. If she didn't know better she would have thought that Kay was attracted to her.
This brought a grin to her face and both sisters immediately gave her their complete attention.
"What? Have I got a smudge on my nose or something?" she laughed at the two women gaping at her.
Kay broke out of her stare smiling ruefully. "No, its just that you suddenly grinned wide and we hadn't been talking about anything in particular to warrant that, so I guess I just wondered, don't know what Louise’s excuse is?"
Louise suddenly embarrassed by her sister's comment continued to stare at Steph, her cheeks turning a bright crimson.
Steph moved out of her seat close to the window and lazily strolled over to where Louise was sitting in a leather armchair, Emily was fast asleep in her carriage next to her.
Crouching her tall lithe frame next to Louise she traced a finger down the heated flesh of her cheek, glancing for a second in Kay's direction. She was given a wink from Kay who picked up Daniel walking out of the room muttering something about her son and a change of diaper.
"What excuse, do you have Louise?" Steph’s voice a husky whisper on level with Louise’s left ear.
Louise leaned unconsciously into Steph’s touch and gazed deep into the ice blue eyes.
"No excuse, I just love to look at you."
Steph gave a throaty chuckle at her explanation or rather lack of one and smiled back into the green eyes focused on her. "Then maybe, we can change the outcome of our conversation yesterday?"
Louise was clearly confused at the question. "I don't know what you mean Steph?"
"Maybe I should refresh your memory, it was a long day as I recall." Steph wryly said as she captured Louise’s hand in hers and brought it to her lips, gently placing a kiss on her palm.
"Are you ready to move on Louise, really move on?"
Louise understood what she was being asked, it had frightened her yesterday but today, today she thought she had seen the glimmer of love back in those eyes she adored. Am I ready? Hell does anyone ever know if they are ready to fall in love, even if they never really fell out of love with that person.
Pressing her hand closer to the lips that she desperately wanted to feel on hers.
"Yes, I'm ready to move on, I think we need to take it slow though."
Steph smiled as the lines around her eyes crinkled showing her pleasure at the answer. Even the scar down her forehead seemed to welcome the news, as it became less pronounced.
"Then I'm with you on this one. We will take whatever pace you want, you call all the shots here Louise."
"In that case I suggest you kiss me before my heart bursts with frustration."
Louise taking the initiative closed the gap between them, becoming non-existent as they both relaxed into the sensual moment, both reluctant to sever the connection.
Minutes later a voice cleared loudly from the doorway and Kay stood with her son smiling broadly. "I guess you're going to be around more often than anticipated Steph?"
Steph pulled reluctantly away from Louise as she answered Kay. "Yeah I think that might be a good idea under the circumstances wouldn't you say?"
Kay glanced at her sister, watching the bemused happiness radiate from her and wanted nothing more than to hug her sister in understanding.
"This time stay around a little longer will you…" realizing she may have made a slip up with that comment, she carefully glanced to Louise first and then over to Steph. Damn! I might have put my foot in it this time.
Steph looked at the shock on Louise’s face, feeling that now was as good a time as any to tell Louise she knew about their past together.
Cradling Louise’s face in her hands she spoke quietly but commandingly to her, ignoring the startled look given by Kay.
"Hey Louise, I know and it's okay. I know that we once lived together and that we became lovers. I know that I left you when you told me about Emily, but I came back and you forgave me. I know how much you loved the old Stephanie, I want so very much for you to love the person I am today in the same way, if you possibly can?" Never taking her eyes from Louise she waited with bated breath.
Kay disappeared with her son once again at that lengthy enlightening confession by Steph. This is a conversation for those two only.
"You know? You know about us? Is that why you want this?" Louise felt disjointed and upset, yet euphoric at the same time.
"No! No Louise I want this, and us, because I love you!" Steph raggedly whispered.
"You love me?" she asked suspiciously, noting that the ice blue eyes never wavered and the look she had wanted to see in those hidden depths had finally appeared on the surface.
"Yes! Why, do you doubt it?" Steph said in exasperation.
"Yes, and yet…I want to believe in you and your love Steph. Does that make me weak?" Louise felt like crying.
"Then if that's weakness, I'm going to be without strength for the rest of my life and beyond." Steph smiled deeply into green glistening eyes.
"Are you going to give me a smile then? I’ll know you forgive me for not telling you I knew about us then."
Tremulously Louise smiled back at her and moved her face away from Steph’s hands and she pushed a stray lock of hair out of her eyes. "Yeah, I forgive you. Do you actually remember any of it?"
Steph looked at Louise shrugging her shoulders. "No I'm sorry, but oh I wish I did Louise. You have no idea how hurt I felt yesterday when I knew you felt that much emotion for me! Yet it wasn't for me, at least not the woman I am now! I want us to start again, you, me, Emily and Argo what do you say?" Steph hadn't felt so out of control in her life, not that she remembered much about her life, but even waking up in hospital with nothing didn't compare to the feeling she had now.
Emily chose that moment to wake up and tell the world she was there.
"I guess my daughter wants a say in this?" Louise laughed at the brief irritated look, which crossed Steph’s face.
Sheepishly Steph looked at Emily and stood up picking the child out of her carriage, holding her in her arms as she whispered to the child.
"What do you say Emily, do you want me in your family too?" holding the child so that she could see Louise.
Emily with her blue eyes trained on her mother and pulling at Steph’s hair with gusto, Emily gave a wide smile and then hiccuped.
"Does that mean yes?" Steph asked puzzled.
Louise grinned at the two of them. "Yeah, nearest you will get for a while. We would be honoured to have you in our family Steph, this time please try to stay around at least until she's out of college."
For the first time in over a year I feel like I have come home! Louise is my home! It doesn't matter if we have nothing, or are parted by circumstances beyond our control, it will always be this way. The primitive bond I have with Louise and only her can never fail, it is meant to last a lifetime and beyond.
"I can't promise that I will be here forever Louise because we both know that obstacles seem to be part of our life together. I will promise to love you forever and there will never be anything that will change that!" Reaching down she pulled Louise up from her chair and placed her free arm around the smaller woman, encircling both mother and daughter, there could never be a better feeling for her than this, this was love in it's purest form.
"I guess we had better let Kay know that she hasn't caused a problem." Louise smiled feeling loved and secure in this position, which she wanted to keep for as long as possible.
Steph dropped a light kiss on Louise’s lips and nodded her head.
"I'll go and find my…future sister-in-law."
The words astonished Louise, as Steph sauntered out of the room, her gait full of confidence and exuberance!
