Chapter 14
The rain beat hard against the windows. Seera switched off the news after she heard about a storm warning for the area and went in search of Janice. When she eventually found her she was staring at a painting. It was one of her that Susan completed a month before her death. From her vantage point, Seera could see Janice’s expression and it was clear she wasn’t aware of the eyes on her. Seera cleared her throat and said, “Hey there, how’s it going?”
Janice jumped at the sound and felt guilty for being where she was and staring at the portrait. For Janice, the remarkable thing about the portrait was the woman looked just like Seera Diamond. “Great. By the clothes, I’d guess this is a relative?”
Seera smiled as she inclined her head slightly. “How did you deduce that instead of a fancy dress affair like the other picture?”
With a self-conscious laugh, Janice replied, “Because it’s signed by Susan Genister. That rather gives it away. You sure look alike though. Is this your aunt?”
Seera considered the words carefully as a small smile played around her full lips. “Yes, she was my aunt.”
“She’s very beautiful.” The words were out before Janice realized she could have been saying them to the woman at her side.
Seera smiled as her body reacted again to Janice’s presence. “Thank you. I’ve just watched the news there’s a storm warning for this area maybe you should think about going home. I’d hate for you to be leaving as it breaks.” Seera saw the disappointed expression cross Janice’s features and closed the gap between them before placing a delicate finger on her cheek. “You can stay the night if you want?”
For a moment, Janice was speechless. “I can?” Seera’s twinkling eyes caught Janice’s gaze and answered her before she heard the word.
“Absolutely.”
They were so close that Janice was sure she could hear Seera’s heart beating. Her gaze transfixed on the woman’s eyes and once again, she felt speechless. “I’d love to stay…thanks.”
Time seemed to stand still as they stared into each other’s eyes. Seera moved first by bending her head slightly and placing her lips gently against Janice’s mouth. It was a cautionary kiss attempting to gauge the reaction and wasn’t disappointed with Janice’s response.
With passion, Janice’s lips eagerly kissed Seera’s and eliminated any doubt that it wasn’t a mutual attraction. Hands that had been inches away from their bodies now clung to curves and molded perfectly. Within minutes, they were feverishly pushing at the boundary of the clothes that separated them from the flesh they yearned to experience.
Seera, having more experience in the art of removing a beautiful woman’s clothes, slipped the jersey Janice was wearing over her head in one fluid movement. The bra was unhooked deftly as Janice groaned in excitement. There was a rush of feeling as her breasts felt Seera’s fingertips running over her nipples.
Janice lost all coherent thought at that moment as she allowed the pleasure building in her body to continue. She ignored the warning messages from her sub-conscious struggling for attention. Lips that had captured hers now slowly nuzzled their way down her neck, as a tongue flicked everywhere torturing her erogenous zones. When they finally came to rest on the left breast and encompassed her nipple, Janice’s head rocked back in delight. She greedily placed her hands on Seera’s head encouraging her to suck harder and deeper as she groaned in pleasure.
The sound of the phone ringing insistently was like an annoying fly ready for zapping. The noise had little meaning to Janice until Seera’s lips stopped their feasting and she moved away reluctantly. “Sorry, I need to take that call.”
Janice reeled from the rejection for the sake of a phone call though her body still hummed with sexual excitement. Without saying anything in response, Janice watched the woman who was on the brink of making passionate love to her seconds before, leave her standing half naked in the room.
Dumbfounded by what had just occurred, Janice finally heeded the little voice that told her she was making a big mistake. In a panic, Janice picked up her jersey and quickly pulled it over her head. She made her way to the hall where she fumbled with her coat before grabbing her purse and leaving without a backward glance.
Seera cursed the call that had reached into her overloading senses. Her body desperately wanted to remain with Janice and continue her seduction but her mind overruled once she heard the phone ring. She knew she needed to take the call when a discreet light flashed red in the hall above the study door indicting the activation of that particular private line, whose only recipient of the number was Darc. She knew he would only call on that line if it were an emergency. Entering the study she heard the door close and muttered, “Perhaps he’s found Tavia and Orin,” her body’s fervor increased dramatically. “If Darc is calling me for a social chitchat, I’II personally cut off his balls, “shaking her head as she reached the phone.
In frustration Seera barked, “yes, what is it Darc, this better be good” as she sank into the chair as her heart raced from the sensual electricity that still claimed her.
Darc pulled the phone away from his ear in irritation when he heard the harsh tone of the Princess. Smarting at her tone but having endured a boring dinner, as his date’s intelligence was infinitesimal compared to his. It had given him time to reflect on the Princess and the predicament they now faced. “I have news your Highness, good news.”
Seera’s sucked in a deep breath as her mind took complete control effectively distinguishing any flame of passion that she still held. “I’m listening, did you find Tavia?”
Silence invaded the conversation for a few moments before Darc reluctantly said, “Not exactly. Orin agreed to a meeting on their direction.”
A small smile flitted across Seera’s lips as she heard the words. “Oh and you wouldn’t care for that would you Darc, Orin making the plans. Where is the meeting and when?” Her heart sank further as she realized that any chance she had of making things up to Janice could end in the next words.
“Tomorrow at your place is all he said along with it would be in the morning and not to contact him for anything more precise.”
“Will Tavia be with him?” When she said Tavia’s name again it felt good…very good as feelings of arousal began to stir once more.
“I suspect that she will be with him although he wasn’t precise about that,” Darc stated.
Seera heard the cautious words. “You never spoke to him did you?”
“My intermediary gave me the information. I believe it to be accurate Princess. Shall I come over and we can talk strategy?” He hoped that she’d say no for the young account’s clerk was very willing. His bed wouldn’t be lonely of that he was certain.
Seera pulled at her lip as she contemplated the question. It wasn’t difficult to answer. “No, drop by my place anytime after six tomorrow morning. After all, what strategy can we possibly have other than the opportunity for us all to go home?”
“True your Highness. I’ll be there at six…shall I bring you breakfast?”
“That won’t be necessary Darc. Good evening,” she said dismissing him. Once she replaced the phone on its cradle, she felt tension growing in her body as she contemplated seeing Tavia again after so long. Then she remembered Janice, turned on heel, and strode out of the study for the room where she’d left her soon to be lover. With a flamboyant apology tasting like ash in her mouth, she entered the room - Janice was gone.
“ Janice where are you?” she said. When she glanced at the hall table where she knew Janice’s outer garments were she sighed heavily - Janice had left the apartment.
“Shit!” The word exploded into the silence of the room as she picked up the phone on the hall table and connected immediately with the concierge. “Has Ms. Clark left the building James?”
“Yes Ma’am she left a few moments ago. I can try to catch up with her if you wish?”
“Do it James,” Seera said in a quiet, yet authoritative tone. She felt the sexual overload as she waited anxiously for him to return and say he had send Janice back to the penthouse.
The line cracked as she heard it picked up. “I’m sorry ma’am but Ms. Clark appears to have gone. It’s raining so hard that it is incredibly difficult to see further than a couple of feet either way up the street. I imagine she left in a taxi.”
“Thank you James, I appreciate your help.” Seera replaced the receiver and hit her fist against the hall wall only to feel the sting of pain. Minutes later, she’d left a message on Janice’s answering machine. Then she started a vigil as she waited for Janice to return her call.
An hour passed and all Seera had for her vigilance - silence. The frustration she felt was irritating. She left her study and reentered the room where she and Janice were on the verge of a night of pleasurable intimacy. She breathed in deeply and could still smell the woman’s scent in the air and she felt the stirrings of longing between her legs. Her eyes scanned the area and she saw something under a side table. She bent to pick it up and found Janice’s bra hanging from her fingers. She closed her eyes and fleetingly recalled the breasts that had responded eagerly to her lips. When she brought the garment up to her nose, she breathed in the musky scent of Janice as her frustrated libido increased ten-fold. She glanced at a clock and made a decision, picking up the phone she made an enquiry about one of her favorites at the escort agency she always used.
Janice had rushed out of the building in a haze of tears and mortification as she finally acknowledged that it had all been one big mistake. She should never have allowed herself to have an emotionally attachment to Seera Diamond.
No matter what she tried to tell herself she knew on the elevator journey to the ground floor that Seera’s only motive in her sexual advances were to get her to bed. As she headed into the driving rain, her thoughts already disorientated, picked up a gear and hit overload. She ignored the taxi that had pulled up outside the building and headed into the abyss of the virtual empty street. A walk home was the only way to clear her head and her memory of what had almost happened.

Chapter 15
Orin gently nudged Tavia’s shoulder to wake her. One thing he could rely on was Tavia’s ability to sleep through anything as she’d done during the flight. The darkening clouds had meant he had to navigate them around as the electricity they elicited had his skills as a pilot pushed to the limit in the primitive aircraft. It also meant that the original landing strip had to be changed. That meant that the chances were good that they would be a couple of hours later than he anticipated for the rendezvous.
“Are we here?” Tavia’s sleep filled voice asked as she yawned and stretched as much as she was able to in the enclosed space.
“Hey darling, how are you feeling?” Orin grinned at Tavia as she leaned in to him and kissed him.
“Refreshed, how was the journey?”
“Not too bad. I had a bit of an inclement weather front to deal with but it was nothing really. It did mean that I had to divert from our original destination. All in all that isn’t too bad…we’ll only be a little later than I figured that’s all,” Orin announced.
Alarmed slightly, Tavia looked closely at Orin’s features and saw the strain of the flight. “Orin you should have woken me. I could have taken over for a spell.”
He chuckled at her concern, then picked up one of her small hands and brought it to his lips. “No worries darling…I had it all under control. When we get to the airport and get a rental car you can drive. I could do with a nap.”
“Orin you don’t need to keep me under wraps all the time you know. I’m only pregnant!” Tavia exclaimed. She smiled, thankful that she could do something to help in the journey.
Orin said, “Tavia, being pregnant can’t be easy. Believe me, anything that causes you less stress means I feel I’m doing my part.”
“Yeah, I believe you. I can see the airport to the left. The sooner we get this over with the better. I’d rather the baby knew her Highness as an ally rather than the enemy,” Tavia replied as she sucked in a breath when she felt the baby kick her vigorously.
“I agree,” Orin said as he picked up the mic. “Tower this is victor twelve, seventy five three, we need clearance to land?”

Chapter 16
Janice took refuge in a twenty-four hour café four blocks from her apartment. She’d looked and felt like a bedraggled rat when she entered the establishment. Even though it had taken her a good her two hours through driving rain to reach that point, her thoughts were still chaotic. By the door, she saw a lone man with an apron around his waist and determined that he was apparently the only one working.
For his part, the man gave her a cursory glance but made no comment about her appearance. “What’ll it be?” he asked.
“Coffee,” Janice said. She sloshed her way to a booth that was the farthest from the door and plopped down onto the cushioned seat. She began wiping the moisture that was a mixture of tears and rain from her face. A quick glance around the dining area made her realize that she wasn’t the only one who had sought an escape from the downpour for the café was probably half full. When she glanced outside, the torrential rain was beginning to flood the streets.
Seera’s imaged taunted her. In the five years they had worked together, there had never been any occasion that would have indicated that they were attracted to each other, or had there?
The man returned with her coffee and plunked it down on the scarred table. “Want anything else,” he asked.
Janice ’s stomach grumbled in protest. It was well after dinnertime and the last time she ate was lunch. “Yes, a toasted muffin.”
With a long sigh, the man said, “Sure,” before he left.
She eased out of her drenched coat and realized that the clothes under it were just as wet. When she lifted the cup of her coffee to her lips, she recalled a situation that occurred about six months earlier.
*
“ Janice I’m taking a trip to South America. Will you take care of Brianna Applegate for me?” Seera didn’t take her eyes from the paperwork she was reading as she calmly announcement her sudden departure and the aftermath that would cause.
Janice shook her head as a sign of resignation to her fate. It would entail a very long and not so meaningful conversation with the woman in question who Seera designated to the ranks of ex-girlfriends. “Why don’t you have the courage to do your own dirty work?” The words spoken aloud so quietly she didn’t even realize she’d said them. Her boss’s eyes flashed like chips of stone as they moved from the documents in hand to stare at the speaker. Janice had that sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach that she’d made a serious error.
“You find my instructions taxing Ms. Clark?”
The tone and the use of her surname had Janice wincing slightly. “Of course not, I apologize for my rudeness. It won’t happen again.” Janice turned on her heel hoping that she could exit the office before her boss demanded her resignation.
“I never said you could leave Janice. In fact sit. I’m fascinated by your remark, particularly in light that I constantly hear from other sources that I don’t use your talents around here enough.”
The silky words had Janice wincing once more–she was in big trouble. She took a seat because she dare not do otherwise. Janice wanted to cut out her own tongue for having repeated what she was thinking. “You don’t, I don’t understand that at all Ms. Diamond. I’m very happy in my work.”
Seera heard a fatal hesitation in the tone of the formulation of a lie. True, it was a small one, but one nevertheless. “We’ve been together too long for you to lie to me Janice. I’m aware you are a very intelligent woman and that the tasks I set for you can be quite mundane. Perhaps I’m testing you…have you ever thought of that?”
Janice blinked rapidly. “I’ve been here five years, isn’t that enough test criteria?”
Janice was surprised when Seera chuckled at the outburst. Seera eyed the woman from a different light. “I guess I haven’t been keeping tabs on the time. These days the years appear to roll over so quickly.”
When she heard the wistful tone in her boss’s voice, Janice wondered if her day was strange as well as she replied, “Yes time does go faster the older you get.” She shrugged. “I know it does for me.” Janice made sure there could be no doubt of her sincerity.
“Look, I know I take liberties in your professional capacity here by asking you to …well, making the break for me with the women in my life. I trust you Janice. Bottom line, I can’t think of anyone I’d trust more with this task. I’m aware of my own lack of tact and you show them compassion on a level I’m incapable of showing. In fact, you do such a great job that strangely enough not one of the girlfriend’s I’ve had in the past four years since you began this process hates my guts. In fact, the reverse is true and I owe that to you.”
Janice wanted to laugh but didn’t because it might be taken in the wrong context. “Is that a compliment?”
Seera stood up and walked around her desk so that she was inches from Janice. Then sat on the corner of the furniture and caught her glance. The genuine expression that shone out of them had Janice beaming. “Oh yes, definitely a compliment. Thank goodness you and I aren’t an item who could I turn to then.”
It was a joke and Janice knew it, but for a few seconds, she really thought there had been a spark between them. With a slight cough to break the bond that had slithered unknowingly between them, Janice said, “That’s o kay; I never go out with the love them and leave them types.”
The moment ended when there was a knock on the door and Darc Cimmerian put his head in the doorway.
*
As thoughts tumbled around in her head, she couldn’t run from the truth anymore. Not only was she attracted to Seera she might even have a deeper feeling for her and that definitely had no chance of survival.
As the muffin arrived, she picked it up and bit into it finding the taste little more than sawdust in her mouth. She began chewing more for something to do rather than thinking of what might have been…

Chapter 17
For the few short hours that had been left of the night, Seera had slept well. The escort service had sent her favorite for some get it out of my system sex that she desperately needed. The woman allowed her to release her pent up frustration by easing her need for sexual gratification, but only for the moment. Seera didn’t know how long it would sustain her until she felt the need for more. On earth, she forfeited the natural powers she possessed on their own planet, but her compensation was generous in the form of a ferocious appetite for sex.
She sighed heavily as she looked at the clock. The phone from the lobby buzzed and she answered it absently. “Yes.”
“Sorry to disturb you Ms. Diamond, but Mr. Cimmerian is here.”
“Tell him to come up and let himself in the door will be unlocked.”
She walked into the study, where she always hid away when she needed to concentrate. In light of the current situation, the demand to think clearly was paramount. The importance to get this right on so many levels made her head ache. Then she reached for the phone and she dialed Janice’s number. Distractions, albeit ones of Janice’s caliber, would become fleeting in the chaos that might follow Tavia’s verdict.
A smile and the increased tempo of her heart signaled success as she heard, “Hello.”
“ Janice its Seera.”
“Seera… Ms. Diamond is it morning already,” Janice replied as her heart thundered at the voice on the other end of the line.
Seera heard the change from familiarity to formal in her address and grinned. “I tried to call you last night. I was worried about you and wanted to make sure you’d arrived at your apartment safely.”
Janice blinked rapidly as she shook away sleep and digested the comment. “I got here eventually…thanks for asking. I guess I should have told you that I had…a date and needed to leave.”
Not missing a beat, Seera said, “It was Saturday night and I should have realized there was no chance that a beautiful woman like you would be free. I wondered if we might have dinner, or lunch tomorrow. I’d really like to apologize for my behavior…it was uncalled for.”
Janice felt drawn to the voice and in particular one word, “let’s just say it was a rash move on both our parts and leave it at that.”
“You want to forget all about it?”
Janice ’s sense of propriety begged her to say yes, but her libido screamed out no! “I think it will be for the best for both of us. Like you said, who’d make the Dear Jane call for you next week?” Janice struggled to keep her voice even. “Maybe it’s better if I don’t continue the cataloguing of your collections.”
Seera felt her emotions take a trip she barely recognized - rejection. “I know you might think like that now Janice, but please don’t. Relax today and think about it for a while.”
Janice heard a note of desperation in the voice and she had to admit it was a first. In all the years, she’d known the woman desperate had never have been spoken in the same breath about her . The situation was rather odd and at the same time, it brought a lump to her throat. Before she could reply, she heard a noise and then another voice in the background. Seera isn’t alone! Her eyes flicked to the bedside clock and she slid into the abyss of feeling like a fool. She felt her demeanor change and allowed her voice to mirror the cold feeling that crossed her heart. “Look I’ll think about it. I’ll see you in the office tomorrow Ms. Diamond. Thanks for calling.” She released the receiver and allowed it to fall onto the cradle decisively as tears coursed down her face. She pulled the bedclothes over her head and as sobs wracked her body once again.
Seera flicked a glance at Darc who bowled into the room unannounced and with a cheerful voice said, “I’ll make breakfast.”
Moments later, Janice gave her the brush off ending the call before she could reply. She realized that Janice probably thought she wasn’t alone and briefly closed her eyes. “Damn it Darc…that was a private call.” she said blasting the man who literally cringed at the callous quality of her words.
With hands held high, Darc quickly did a couple of reverse steps and in a simpering voice said, “I’m so sorry your Highness,” before bowing and leaving her alone in the room.
After spending the last century on the planet with him, she knew him almost as well as she knew herself. “I know him so well I can see his faults not my own. Then again, do I have any faults…no, I don’t think so.” Seera chuckled as she left the study in search of her aide.
He glanced cautiously at her and tried to right any perceived wrong in her eyes. “Good morning your Highness and what a grand morning it is.” The Princess ignored his cheerful greeting and led him into a large informal room where he sat, with familiarity, on one of the leather sofas. “I can make breakfast. Depending on how this goes this morning we might need it.”
“Coffee will have to suffice,” she said in a clipped tone. “Have you heard anything else regarding our friends?” Seera asked over her shoulder as she went to the kitchen to retrieve the coffee and mugs from the kitchen.
Darc watched her leave and let a small smug smile play around his lips for it was a rare occasion when the Princess waited on anyone. Once they were back their home planet, it would never happen and he could never speak of the time it did. When she returned he said, “Nothing. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if they arrive or if it was a trick.”
Seera’s face became like a thundercloud. “You think this is a trick? Exactly why would that be? We haven’t done anything to cause that distrust. If you remember, they were the ones who left me!”
Darc took the offered coffee and sipped it slowly as he formulated a response to her angry words. “Perhaps trick was a bad choice of words. We have no way to know what they are thinking for it has been a long time since we saw them last.”
Seera muttered, “Too long if you ask me,” before she looked at Darc. “We should never have parted as we did. I take full responsibility for that and hopefully I can make amends.”
Darc remained silent. In her current mood, he knew it was better to do that than to interject his opinions. He eyed her discreetly and immediately noticed the dark circles under her eyes indicating sleeplessness. He too hadn’t sleep much but he guessed his reason was far more pleasurable than the Princess who took a seat opposite him. When he noticed the Princess’s eyes fixed on him, he inclined his head slightly and said, “I’m sure it will be in everyone’s best interests to let bygones be bygones.”
Anxious, Seera stood and moved to the window that overlooked the park. Her finger tapped against the porcelain mug she held and the reverberation soon became the only sound in the room. In a small way, it settled her precarious thoughts. “What time is it now?”
Darc replied, “ six fifteen. Do you know what you want to say when they arrive?” He knew what he’d like to say but that was not going to happen for the moment.
“The only strategy I see is that Tavia checks out the report.” She shrugged. “After that, I guess we’ll have to work something out that is mutually beneficial.” Seera looked toward the skies. The weather had changed dramatically since the previous evening. Even at that time of the morning, she could see there would be cloudless skies and the promise of a beautiful summer day. She only wished her own mood matched it. “I need to make a phone call. I want to be certain that the technician is available twenty-four seven if Tavia needs to speak with him. I’ll be right back.”
Darc gave her a quizzical glance. “Ok I’ll be right here. Do you mind if I make some toast?”
“Do whatever you want,” Seera remarked absently as she returned to her study.
“I’ll make you some too…” Darc realized he was speaking to himself and went into the kitchen to make something to eat.
A few seconds after her call, Seera heard the buzzer and with a heavy sigh, convinced herself that what she was about to do would be good for them. She stood, moved to the study door, opened it and wasn’t surprised to find her aide standing in the hallway.
“They’re on the way up,” he said.

Chapter 18
Orin held Tavia’s hand as they traveled upward in the elevator. He felt the slight tremor in her slim fingers and squeezed them gently in comfort and understanding. He, more than anyone else, knew how nervous Tavia was about the meeting. He originally determined that he should go alone to check out what kind of reception he got fearing the confrontation would only be bad for Tavia. He knew that the deterioration of her relationship with the Princess troubled her and he didn’t want to inflict any more pain on her than she had already experienced
His thoughts turned to Darc who he considered a scum bag. Words didn’t exist that could remotely explain his hatred of a man he had once called friend. He held his violent intentions toward the aide in check thanks to Tavia who prevented him from killing the man on the spot months earlier. She had taken him aside and patiently told him to leave the hate behind and follow her back to the peace of their shared home on the island.
His grim expression that the memory evoked began to dissolve as he felt the smile tug at his lips when he recalled her placating touch. It not only excited his body, but also ignited a flame of devotion that never would go out. He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly.
Tavia, startled by Orin’s action, stared into his eyes and saw his love for her shining. If only I could offer him half the feeling he has for me, then I wouldn’t feel like such a fraud most of the time. He doesn’t complain even though he knows how much I love Seera. Maybe when we meet again she won’t have the impact on me she once had. Her bright smile vied with the artificial lights in the elevator. “Thank you.”
Unable to drag his eyes from Tavia, Orin cocked his head to one side. “Thank me for what Tavia?”
The tip of her tongue moistened her dry lips. ”Do I need a reason?”
“Never.” He ducked his head and kissed the lips that he knew he would watch for an eternity as the bitterness that he tried to hide away invaded his thoughts. His love wasn’t enough. The kiss concluded as the rumble of doors about to open sounded. Once opened fully, they gazed at the sight of the penthouse beckoning them.
“I guess this is it Orin.” Tavia heaved a deep breath and briefly touched the baby that was safe and secure in her womb.
“Yes it is. Let’s get it over with shall we and then maybe we can finally settle down and have our baby in peace.” Orin clasped her hand tightly as they headed for the door and the Princess.
They quickly ate up the distance between the elevator and the door to the penthouse. Once there, Orin took a deep breath and squared his shoulders in preparation for whatever would greet them. As he pressed the bell and waited, knowing there was nothing he couldn’t handle. The door opened in what appeared to be slow motion until they came face to face with the one person they would quite happily have no regrets about ever seeing again.
“Orin, Tavia thank you for arranging this meeting,” was Darc Cimmerian solicitously greeting. He held out his hand in welcome.
Orin saw the hand and ground out between gritted teeth, “We didn’t come here to see you, you creep!”
Tavia immediately felt the tension in Orin and a small smile tugged at her lips. She knew that his prowess as a warrior could kill the man with one swift blow but she knew his training kept him in check. “Darc, we came here to see the Princess. Is she is here?”
With a slight bow, he caught the eyes of the woman and saw the coldness she held for him. He had expected that for he did instruct her to kill the child she was carrying. He also knew that in the Princess’ apartment he was safe from Orin who he knew wanted to murder him–he expected that too.
“Lady Emerald, it is good to see you. Yes, the Princess is here, please enter.” He held the door open as Tavia and Orin passed by him before they glanced at each other. He felt a marked increase in tension. It was clear to him by their body language that they didn’t trust him–as expected. On the other hand, he knew he might have to diffuse the situation with some slick talk if the Princess found out that he knew of the baby and attempted to have them abort it.
As Tavia walked further inside the penthouse, she felt the familiarity of the place as she experienced Seera’s personality embedded in every stick of furniture and decoration. I expect it will prove to be true in all the rooms. When she spied the monochrome photo taken on their last few days of happiness, it brought back good memories. The connection she’d always felt with the Princess flooded over her as she realized her old friend too cherished some of their memories. Her mind flicked to the photo album she kept and looked through on a regular basis. Memories were what made their lives. I’m glad Seera still thinks we are part of her life…even if it is remote.
As Orin and Darc continued farther inside, Tavia stopped in front of the photo and allowed the memories of the sights, sounds and smells of those times in Asia to surround her. She felt that special place in her heart reserved for where only the best memories came to life. Then, she heard the soft voice that she would always remember, call her name.
Seera noticed that when the two the men walked into the room Tavia was not with them and her heart sank. Protocol dictated she not ask about the woman’s whereabouts so she merely nodded at Orin when their eyes met. “Thank you for making the journey Orin it’s been a long time. I need to get the report from my study then I will be with you.” She stepped into the hallway and it was there that she felt the existence of her friend. She turned her head toward the sensation and saw the woman who had stolen her heart when she had been a child and still held it even now. “Tavia.”
Tavia saw the Princess and gave the royal presence as much of a bow as her current condition permitted. What she hadn’t expected was the sudden widening of Seera’s eyes and gasp of shock as she saw the bulge of her pregnancy.
Seera’s heart was thudding and any words she’d previously acted out in her mind to say when she saw Tavia again simply disappeared. The heavily pregnant woman in the hall had struck her mute. She closed her eyes only to have them fly open again when an abhorrent thought screamed…this is Orin’s child. So many questions drifted to her lips but she didn’t emit one of them.
Once her emotions calmed in a resolute fashion that would have made her mother proud, Seera moved forward to within inches of Tavia. The joy of seeing her again after so many years, removed any barriers she had put up and she smiled genuinely. “You look radiant yourself. It’s good to see you again Tavia.” Her breath held captive.
The first tentative words between them broke the initial ice and Tavia returned the smile. “It’s been a long time.” Tavia said with a rueful sigh.
They didn’t have time to say more as Orin appeared. When he saw Tavia speaking with the Princess, feelings of his own insecurities surfaced as a wave of trepidation swept over him. “Is everything ok, your Highness,” Orin said as he bent in a full bow of respect.
The Princess turned and gazed properly to her ex-bodyguard noting that he hadn’t changed much before she succumbed to the realization that he looked great- Tavia is good for him; a pang of jealousy hit her in the gut. She then centered her emotions and said, “Yes Orin, thank you both for agreeing to this meeting.”
Orin heard the formal, yet sincere tone and smiled slightly. “You only ever had to ask your Highness,” he said as he nodded his head slightly. Deep down, Orin knew it was to his advantage to allow the disagreement to fester for he was the only one that benefited.
For Seera, the man, known for his prowess in combat rather than words, had said it all in one short sentence. You only had to ask…is that true. Have I been so blind and full of my own importance that I use others like Darc to do my…what was that term Janice used…ah, yes, ‘dirty work’ for me? She closed her eyes once again as a sadness tired to worm its way into her mind. “ Thank you Captain Steele. Please, let’s go into the other room for we have much to discuss.”
Each realized that too much water had passed under the bridge for them to forget the past, but at least a thaw might have been set in motion. They walked into the room where Darc negligently sat on a sofa. Tavia noted the smug look of confidence on the man’s face while in the Princess’s home.
“Please make yourself comfortable. Before we begin do you need anything?” Seera asked as her gazed wandered unconsciously to the swelling of the baby.
“I’d love a glass of water it was a long trip.” Tavia smiled her thanks.
“Darc, attend to Lady Emerald’s wish. In fact, we will all have water bring a pitcher along with four glasses.”
Darc’s eyes glowed like the embers of a fire as he reluctantly stood to do the Princess’s bidding. His eyes shot a disparaging look in Tavia’s direction as he left the room.
“Your Highness, you have news of home?” Orin said as he held Tavia’s hand in a tight vice-like clasp that made it impossible for Tavia to remove it without a struggle. “To be frank, your message was rather vague.”
Although Tavia was thankful that Orin took the lead in the conversation, she was less than happy about his hand gripping hers. She remembered the expression on Seera’s face several minutes earlier when they met in the hallway it had held wonder.
As the others spoke, an ugly theory began to develop in Tavia’s head. Is Darc working on his own agenda? He’s never liked me from the moment he became Seera’s personal aide. Why would he want the baby terminated? What possible good would it do him? Her brow creased as she explored the ideas further. Did he hope to drive a wedge between the Princess and me? It seemed logical to her that by her leaving all those years earlier she accomplish it on her own. There was no need for him to interfere.
Darc returned at that moment and she watched him carefully noting that he didn’t take his eyes off the Princess. As she watched and listened to every word or gesture he made she shrank in revulsion by its intensity. Tavia’s eyes took in her friend and she noted that her outward appearance hadn’t changed at all. The confident arrogance that only those brought up in the royal line of succession carried around all their lives remained. As obnoxious, as it could be the trait endears me to her even more. I would give my life for her still as her friend and because I love her. Orin, she knew would lay down his life for the Princess out of duty and a deep regard for her position. When she regarded Darc in the same light, she realized he didn’t fit into any of those categories. Why didn’t I seen that all those years ago on our home planet? It was clear to her now that Darc wanted the Princess in every way possible. That obsession made him dangerous and potentially deadly
“Tavia are you ok?” Orin asked. He had noticed the concern on her face and the glazed look in her eyes before he heard her sharp intake of breath. His eyes momentarily took in the Princess and he understood perfectly.
Seera watched in anxious concern after she asked Tavia to read the report and there was no response. Her pulsed reacted to the tenderness that Orin showed Tavia and it brought a bitter taste to her lips.
From far away, Tavia heard the gentle voice of Orin and it brought her back to the present with a jolt. “I’m sorry, I…I was lost …I was far away.”
Orin tilted her chin toward him as he looked deeply into her eyes. “You sure you’re ok? We can leave and you can rest. We really don’t have to do this today.”
“Run it by me once more.” She winked into Orin’s craggy features. “I promise I’m fine.”
He grinned slightly for he knew she zoned out on him quite a few times during the pregnancy.
Seera had seen Orin’s possession of Tavia and glanced irritably at their clasped hands as jealousy and loneliness began to intensify. It was at that moment she realized it was too late to make amends. The pain of losing so precious a person from her life for so long briefly shattered her inner control.
As she watched them, her heart screamed I’ll never be second best to anyone. It was then that she knew she would have to replace Tavia in her life and move on. Sadness overwhelmed her as Darc’s saying screamed out in her head. When the opportunity arises, you must take it.She closed her mind as she willed it to stop the thoughts that tortured her. Not only have I physically lost my own kingdom, I’ve lost it inside my heart as well. Her mind was in turmoil for she didn’t know how much longer she could survive in a world that was not hers.
“I need a few minutes,” Seera announced as she stood up and began to walk quickly away. Her sudden movement surprised the others as they automatically stood in respect before watching her walk with determination out of the room.
“What the hell is going on?” Darc muttered under his breath. “Let me speak with her. She looks like she didn’t sleep well last night…or maybe there’s a problem that I don’t know about.” He rapidly followed the steps that the Princess had taken.
With a puzzled expression, Orin turned to Tavia. “What’s going on?”
“Search me.”
With an intense smile Orin, placed his hands around Tavia’s waist. “Any time, my love, any time,” he said as he kissed her tenderly. He felt her recoil slightly but chalked it up to their long journey for what else could it be. His eyes fixed on the opening to the hallway where the Princess exited earlier. It’s her…it’s always her.
Tavia felt awkward with Orin’s possessive manner and didn’t understand the reaction since she hadn’t felt that way in the past. The way Seera looked when she first saw her earlier flooded her mind and she knew exactly why she felt uncomfortable. She let out a small sigh and picked up the report as she began to read what the foundation of their discussions would be.

Chapter 19
Janice finally managed to drag herself out of bed. She had run out of tears and she now frowned at herself in the mirror. The skin under the eyes was puffy and dark from her lack of sleep and the stream of tears that seemed never ending gave her a haunted expression. She was dreading the rest of the day and in all likelihood the rest of her life. Her lips descended into a curve that reflected a sorrow that held little hope of joy. She sighed deeply feeling as though her body was sagging like a half filled sack.
Twenty-four hours ago, my life was completely different. Now, I wish I declined the offer to help. It certainly would have saved me from this mental torture and heartache. She pulled at her cheeks in an attempt to remove the pallor but all it did was cause her to flinch at the pain she inflicted. “This is ridiculous. How, have I lost control of this situation? Why do I feel this way? It’s totally out of character. I should never have allowed my personal feelings to come between my work and me.” She closed her eyes, bit her lip in concentration and decided as quickly to open them again. The only thing she saw or heard was one face and one voice - Seera.
Her eyes traveled to the bedside clock and she was amazed to see that it was only seven-thirty. Time was moving in slow motion and she felt sure that Seera’s call occurred much earlier. “I’m such an idiot. I waited like a lemon until I was thirty–one to experience love. Within the space of twenty-four hours, my chances have evaporated and left me with the chasm of a lonely heart. Where does that take me from here?” She fought back the tears that threatened to fall. “God I wished I’d stayed home and stuck with the movies.”
Janice went to the bathroom hoping that a shower might help sooth her thoughts. As she stood under the cascading water she wondered if she allowed the water to run as fast and as hot as possible would it eradicate all thoughts of Seera – it did not. Her next thought was to soak in the tub for as long as her body would allow. All that succeeded in doing was to turn her skin prune-like. She climbed out of the tub, toweled herself down and put on her favorite very old and tattered robe.
Once she covered her wet hair with a towel, she proceeded to the kitchen, deciding that tea was a good soothing brew. After she switched on the kettle, chose a mug from the rack and placed a tea bag in the cup a tiny smile tugged impatiently at her lips. Watching a kettle boil certainly is the height of sheer boredom although in my case I’d call it depression. As she waited for the whistle, she switched on her computer. She knew that the people, who contributed to her sci-fi blog, always had some sort of theory that would make her smile. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do…besides I have to ask them about compact energy theories. She knew one of them would know the significance of compact energy theories and if they didn’t, they’d invent one.
She switched on her computer and watched it boot up as she felt a sense of security that she hadn’t experienced in the whirlwind of the last twenty-four hours. “Thank god for the internet I don’t know what I’d do without the friends I’ve made there.”

Chapter 20
Tavia watched Darc return to the room with a grim look as he sank into the chair opposite them. “Did you find out if there’s a problem.”
“Women,” Darc replied.
Orin had to prevent the laugh that bubbled up inside. Tavia’s cautionary touch was enough to prevent him from teasing the poor excuse for a Corinthian. He snorted softly. He knew that the Princess was one person Darc had no chance with - ever.
“Is that a disparaging remark for all women generally or just an expression of frustration regarding one in particular?” Tavia asked.
She hadn’t expected him to reply so she was surprised when Darc muttered a few words. “She’s losing it. I never thought I’d say that about her especially now that we’re so close to leaving this planet and going home. Why don’t you reason with her…she’s always listened to you?”
Orin turned to Tavia with a silent message in his eyes. I don’t want you to go.
Tavia responded immediately, the invitation impossible to deny. She pulled her bulging body up off the sofa and went toward the hall where she’d first met Seera. Quicker than most would imagine for someone in her condition, she managed to reach Seera before she could step out the door. “Seera, are you ok? Darc appears upset?”
Seera flicked Tavia a glance. She thought about giving Tavia the same explanation as she had given Darc by saying it is none of your business. But, the concern she saw in Tavia’s eyes held her mouth in check. Her old friend had always been able to convey in simple words and glances her deepest emotion. “I’m sorry to run out on you and Orin, Tavia. Call it the shock of finally seeing you,” she said in hesitation, “…both again. I just wanted some time on my own…you know how I always did.”
Tavia saw the desperation for understanding in her old friend’s face. As she carefully studied the Princess’s features, she surmised whatever it was took priority over getting home. As she posed the question of who in her mind, she felt a sting travel up her spine- of course, her damned libido is taking priority. I should have remembered. Tavia felt a twinge from the baby and realized that she had to leave that train of thought.
Tavia moved closer to her friend and tentatively reached out and touched the Princess’s hand. “I need to confirm the report so we have no doubts about the possibility of leaving for home.”
Seera said, “That you do.”
When she saw the Princess gaze down at her hand a small smile began to creep across her face. Tavia said, “We’ll be waiting with the report status when you get back. I think getting some air is a good idea…I know it helps me when I’m feeling claustrophobic,” Her heart then flipped several beats as Seera dazzled her with one of her impressive smiles - the one that came from her heart and rarely openly displayed.
“You do remember. A walk would be good. I feel like I’ve been up all night…waiting for you.” It was a lie but Tavia would never know. “I’ll be back later…with breakfast.” Seera turned to leave then spun back around. “Tavia.”
“Yes?” Tavia saw a warm look enter the Princess’s eyes.
“I’m please for you…but you know what it means when we return home.” Seera shrugged. “It won’t be easy you know,” she said as her gaze rested on her belly.
Tavia took a few steps closer to her friend and felt a jolt that caused as her heart beat faster. She smiled and let her eyes rest on the Princess’s hand before she looked back into the gray eyes, which she knew mirrored hers. She reached out, gently took Seera’s hand and when she saw a slight nod from the Princess, she rested it on her protruding belly. “It isn’t an abomination, its life Seera.”
The baby took that moment to kick Seera’s hand. Her eyes grew wide as her thoughts shifted tumultuously. “I need some air.” Her words echoed in the corridor as she left the apartment.
In silence, Tavia dissolved the words into her system and concluded that her earlier thoughts were spot on. There was no doubt in her mind that Darc was acting alone in his request for the termination of the pregnancy. Everything finally made sense or at least some of it. I’ve been a damn fool not to talk directly with her…if only I could turn time backwards. They needed to find an answer to the why…and we have Darc all alone. With a chuckle, she turned around and headed into the battle zone…she would enjoy the fight immensely. When she walked back into the room, Tavia stood beside Darc’s chair causing him to jump slightly.
“Did you talk her out of her funk?”
For a few seconds she actually felt sorry for him but as her hand touched the movement of the baby kicking madly, the thought receded into the distance. “No, but she did impart some knowledge that makes a lot of sense now. However, first there’s something I’ve got to do.”
Before Darc could reply, Tavia raised her fist, clenched it and with resounding force punched him as hard as she could square in the face. Her face filled with satisfaction, as she cradled her fist to her breast. “It wasn’t the Princess who said abort our baby…it was YOU!”
Orin watched the exchange and went from shock, to delight then to downright amazement. He hadn’t seen her hit anyone like that in decades.
Darc finally found his voice as he held his bleeding nose. “I did not!”
“When my child is old, enough, I’m going to impart a story or two that might prove interesting but debilitating for you Cimmerian.” Her eyes fixed on the small man. “I wonder what Seera will say when she learns of your travels.” Tavia moved to take her seat next to Orin and although she didn’t look at him, she knew he was applauding her silently.
Darc gave them both a malevolent look and retreated to the kitchen to take care of his injury.
“I love you darling,” Orin whispered into her ear as he tenderly took her injured hand and tried to massage away the pain.
In his absence, Orin turned Tavia’s chin toward him and gazed into her eyes. “He deserved that and more. But, until we get home, I think it is best we not tell the Princess. Now is not a time for dissension between the four of us.” A grin curved his lips. “Remind me never to get you angry you throw a mean punch.” A twinge of remorse filled his heart for he knew that his action regarding the conception of their child was every bit as reprehensible.
Tavia smiled broadly. “I do, don’t I. Actually, I think the baby approved too. Now, let’s get on with doing what the Princess called on us to do. You can fill me in on the parts I didn’t hear.”
Orin grinned as he related as much as he knew. As he watched and waited while Tavia read the report, he recalled the look she shared with the Princess and his heart wept.

Chapter 21
The doorbell rang and Janice looked up to the clock noting it was only nine am.
Janice padded barefoot down her narrow hall and when she arrived at the door, she flung it open without looking through the peephole. With a groan, she came face to face with Seera Diamond.
“Why are you here?” she demanded.
Seera knew exactly why she was there- her world was crumbling around her, for Tavia would no longer be able to share her life in any capacity except servitude. “Hi Janice…look, I wondered if you’d join me for lunch or dinner. I woke you up early and figured I owed…”
Janice managed to unscramble some of her scattered thoughts and held up her hand in protest. “You owe me nothing Ms. Diamond. I don’t think having either meal with you is a good idea.”
Seera refused to let Janice thwart her. As she gazed into Janice’s pale features, she deduced that Janice had probably had a difficult time sleeping. Time was of the essence and she smiled warmly trying a different tack. Then, as gently as she could, she teased, “Could that be because of the outfit?” She gesture to Janice’s old tattered robe. Just seeing Janice standing before her in what could only be called the worse fashion crisis in history, made her want to hug her and kiss her soundly
Janice glanced down at her attire and allowed a faint blush to color her cheeks. She briefly closed her eyes then opened them and found herself caught by gentle eyes that held only mild teasing. “I don’t think it would do your reputation much good if you were seen with me.”
That’s laughable at best! Is that what Janice thinks…that she isn’t good enough for me? Janice is probably worth more than I am…at least she doesn’t have an ulterior motive for being here. The gremlins in her head again reminded her of Tavia. Damn you Tavia at every moment of seduction you plague me with your image. “If you would allow me the pleasure of your company later Janice, it could only ever be excellent for my reputation, trust me.” Honey rolled off Seera’s lips. “Why don’t you come by this morning and do some more of the cataloguing and then we can go from there. What do you say?” She watched as several expressions cross Janice’s face before she answered.
“Give me ten minutes and I’ll change.” Janice held the door open a little wider and motioned for Seera to enter. She pointed to the kitchen and the whistling tea kettle and said, “Make yourself something to drink…I was going to have more tea.”
Seera captured Janice’s eyes and the flashed what she knew would be taken as a silent thank you. “I’ll make us both some tea while you go change.”
“Thank you,” Janice replied as the words almost stuck in her throat. She felt the warmth of the woman’s presence as she entered her bedroom to change. Janice pulled on a clean pair of jeans and a denim shirt, which were the first things she came to in her closet. Although she wasn’t dressed as immaculately as her visitor was, it would do.
Minutes later, having drunk almost in one gulp the hot tea, they were heading toward Seera’s home. They got out of a cab a block from Seera’s apartment at a café that Seera thought had the most delicious breakfast fare on that side of the city. After ordering breakfast, they sat in awkward silence waiting for the take-out.
Janice eyed Seera and wondered why she ordered so much food. She really must be hungry. When the hostess offered them complimentary coffee Janice took it as welcome relief from their silence. She took her cup and tried to drink it quickly just as she had done with the tea earlier and frowned when Seera chuckled. “What?”
“You know it’s something I never noticed about you before,” Seera said as a smile began framing her mouth.
Janice blinked and asked, “What’s that?”
Seera pointed to the coffee as her face filled with an all out smile. “You drink hot drinks really fast. I’ve known you all these years and I’m surprised I didn’t notice that before.” Her eyes discreetly traveled over Janice’s body just as they had on many occasions over the years. I’ve always thought she had a great body…I wonder why I all of a sudden I want her in my bed. Seera knew why but refused to acknowledge the reason as she watched for Janice’s reaction.
Janice felt her eyes grow as big as saucers. “I doubt you noticed that much about me…you’re always way too busy.”
There were a few moments of silence as Seera decided how she was going to answer. Perhaps the truth is best. She responded with,” I know that your eyes shine when you find something amusing. When you smile, your whole face takes on an enchanting glow. Did you know that you wrinkle your nose when you concentrate and that…?”
“Enough, enough please.” Embarrassed laughter came from across the table as Janice tried not to turn into a beetroot. “I guess you noticed.” She knew then that the ice broke between them and she smiled at Seera.
As Seera’s hand rested on hers, Janice felt herself losing all use of her mental faculties as she drowned in the warmth of the eyes that captured hers. “Yes I did. Janice. I meant what I said…I’m truly sorry for my behavior yesterday. Shall we start all over with a clean slate?”
As she heard the words, Janice wanted to cry out no.She wanted to start where they left off and didn’t care if it made her seem wanton and without morals. A part of her still held the naïve romantic notion that falling in love was something precious to be treasured. She knew that there was no way that one week of sex and then a goodbye without a second thought was acceptable to her. Etched deep in her heart was the resolve that she would not become another of Seera’s conquests who she bought off with a bauble when it was over. “Why?”
This time it was Seera’s turn to blush a little as she felt the unfamiliar heat sting her cheeks. How can I bullshit this and still come out smelling of roses? Dumb question…I’ll do just as I always have. “Why,” she said with a nod. “There’s always has to be a why…hasn’t there?” she whispered.
Janice gave her a quizzical look and was surprised to see the pink staining Seera’s cheeks. “Yes.”
The one word response had Seera giving Janice her best sheepish look before her lips curled into a rueful smile. “Would you believe me if I told you that the hours we’ve spent together recently make me feel good inside and that hasn’t happened to me in a very, very long time. It felt to me like my life had a meaning again and that I wasn’t drifting without any idea when I’d hit land again. When we talked and spent time together in my apartment…and the park, I guess you slipped behind my barriers and you were the lighthouse I’d been searching for to bring me home.” Seera saw the surprise and disbelief fill Janice’s face and she shrugged. “Guess that sounds strange to you.” She gave herself a high-five.
Janice certainly didn’t have the words to follow Seera’s and was glad to see a waiter deliver their breakfast. As they left the café, words went unsaid and silence ensued until they reached the entrance of Seera’s apartment building.
Seera gave Janice a mock tentative look. “Would you like to try again Janice?”
Janice didn’t have a puzzled expression in her eyes this time, for she knew exactly how to answer that simple question. “Yes, I’d love to.”
As their glances caught, happiness shone out of Janice’s eyes and she thought she saw the same emotion on Seera’s face.
“Great,” Seera said. “We can celebrate later. Is it a deal?”
With a wide smile, Janice replied, “Deal.” She watched as Seera grinned before she allowed a shadow to cloud her eyes for a moment. “Is that a problem? I mean if you have other plans its ok.” Janice said when she saw Seera’s expression.
“No, Janice, I invited you. At the moment I have people in the apartment for a business meeting.” Seera swallowed hard wondering if the whole affair was foolhardy. “I’ll have the meeting over as soon as possible and …we can talk.” Seera felt the stirrings of passion.
Janice ’s face beamed as she nodded before her thoughts drifted to one undeniable fact - she didn’t know about the meeting. She felt herself shrug. “I’ll look forward to that.” Janice finally answered.
Seera played gently with Janice’s fingers as they passed the concierge. Yep she’s in my bed before nightfall. She wanted the woman now but didn’t want to take any chance that Tavia would run off again… Janice could wait for a little while longer.
